Really sorry about hijacking your thread. Welcome to MSE by the way.

I used to live in Zim and SA and guess where we went on holiday when I was a kid ...

    Scottburgh !!!!

We used to stay in Peace Haven :A and the other flats on the otherside of that green field Miranda Court I think it was called. Used to love sliding down those slopes on a piece of cardboard !

What wonderful memories and I just had to say howzit from a fellow countryman.

Hey how old are you guys? We used to stay at Peacehaven too and used to slide down those slopes!!! Maybe it was with you that I used to race down with!! I used to love the mini putt putt course too and the pool at high tide when the waves used to crash over the wall!. Fab times!! What a small world we live in hey! Thanks for reminding me of those memories!!!

    Happy debt busting to all!

  • 1984 I was in Scottburgh, my kids were 12 and 8, I can remember being on the beach, the kids playing in the sea and a guy said that I should keep a close watch on the kids, he said now and then a freak wave would roll in and before you knew it you were washed onto the rocks, I had a really nice cream coloured Audi 100L never ever gave me a problem.,drove like a dream. I can almost taste those T bone steaks, they were massive they make the T bones in this country look like lamb chops. Now I am feeling hungry and I am on a weight loss crusade ( not to be confused with a diet)

Hi skollieal, well done for joining MSE to do your debt-busting. I notice you are an RCN member. Are you getting all the tax relief you are entitled to? The RCN encourages you to get tax relief (and claim back tax, up to six years I think) on
    - RCN membership (as it is your professional membership)
    - NMC fees
    - essential work shoes etc.

If you call their 24-hour number 0845 722 6100, they can send you a form to complete and send to your own tax office (your employer can give you the tax office address).

RCN also has a debt counselling service - chat to them about what help they can give.

    HTH :)

Hi there following my initial posts on here, thought a bit of an update was necessary.

1`) Re Nat west monthly payments- thanks for the suggestion that I investigate. Discovered i wasnt getting any benefits so cancelled it and now am £144 richer a year!! Yahoo!!!

    2) Decided after follow up visit with bank not to cancel PPI becasue they told me that if I got sick or died my debts would continue to mount. Have probably had my fears fed on but had to make a quick decision and although i would have loved to have taken the risk decided not to. I know that the baggage re my sister and co is playing on my mind and I guess they fed right into that, or am i being unfair?

    3) Have discovered after talking to my Sister and brother in laws solicitors (paid by moi) that in South Africa debts do not die with you, so the situation is even worse than i imagined. My nephews aged 14 and 17 are being told on Tuesday that the house has to be sold to pay all the creditors baying for their money. A very sad and ****ing scary situation but those are the facts. I really did hope that someone was pulling a fast one but alas it doesnt seem to be the case.

So i remain truly yours in serious debt with no doubt more to come with 2 homeless boys.

Motto: What doesnt kill you strengthens you. I hope that is true!!!

Sorry to be so morbid but only got this news today.
    Cheers

No, you are not unfair. PPI may be right for you, but not from your bank. I think the insurance forum is the best to look on for alternatives, although I remember reading the Post Office had introduced a v cheap and good policy. It really can be got much, much cheaper elsewhere and as it's over a long period it could make a massive difference.

only a tiny detail but it might help save a few more pennies ... somewhere on the tax board theres info about how you can claim back tax if you have to wash your uniform for work?? I'm guessing you waea a uniform in your job and I think you can claim about £10 per year tax relief for this and you can also backdate it for about 5 years. Sorry I can't remember the exact details but it was one of the first bits of info I found on this website and I just had to send a letter off to get it. Some people get the cash but I had my tax code changed to allow for it so I could earn a higher amount before I paid tax.
    Good luck with everything

Re PPI have a read of Martin's article on Cutting Loan Insurance Costs. Hope this helps. Good Luck!
