I bank with Nat west - they take £12 off every month whether in the black or the red. I presumed it was a standard bank charge or is this not the case?

I would phone them and ask them what is it for. When i was with barclays i was paying £14 a month for an upgraded account, which was useless really and i was throwing money away.

    Hi skollieal and welcome

The £12 you pay to Nat West is a monthly fee they charge for having the advantage gold account. Unless you use the perks this provides, I would strongly recommend down-grading your account.

As for the internet - Tiscali told us that we needed a BT landline but when I checked with BT this was untrue! We have line rental, calls from TalkTalk and our internet provider is BT.

  • Hi skollieal, welcome, you have made a very smart move by coming to the MSE and especially the DFW forum, the people on here are fantastic, I can,t offer you a lot of advice but I can offer my support, I can only say that the thing that opened my eyes more than anything was when I started a diary which I would advise you to do, you won't beleive the rubbish you spend your hard earned money on, also read other threads on the forum.
On another subject where in South Africa does your mother live? I lived in SA in the 80s for 9 years in the Free State in a small town called Allanridge.

  • I'm guessing here but have you got the free weekend and evening package with BT?

My mum has and it has annoyed me that she was paying for this whilst new customers were getting it free (apart from the line rental element).

So I got on the phone to BT and complained and within 5 minutes the guy transferred her over to the special offer, so now she does get free evening and weekend calls!

just to confirm that in the UK if you die the debts come out of your estate. if there is nothing in the estate then the debts just die. so if you can cancel thjat PPI i would ..its hugely expensive .

Although i dont know the situation in SA i can't believe relatives can be burdened with someone elses debt...it seems to me that someone's trying it on.

  • Thanks for your reply and offer of support. It is incredible how much of that there is on here! What a gem of a site! My mother is in Port Shepstone on the Kwazulu Natal coast near Margate. I went to High school there and did my nurse training in Durban. I haven't heard of Allanridge but it is always a pleasure to meet fellow country mates!

AFAIK you can write off membership of one professional organisation against tax.
You might be able to reduce your costs there.

Get rid of the PPI, that's an insane amount to be paying.

I know it does seem crazy but we are having to pay off the house or the kids lose it.....maybe that is what it is all about? As for the debts who knows??

On the subject Of PPI's, what security do they provide then??? I have an appointment with an insurance guy at beginning of March to discuss other options so will need to do some reading so I am better prepared this time! Thanks for the reassurance re debts dying if anything happens to you.

  • Margate havn't been there, I was down in Natal in 1984 stayed in Scottborough for 2 weeks on holiday when my mother in law came to visit us. Keep your chin up and look for positives in everything you do, it's amazing how much better you feel just by coming on this forum and reading the posts. :D
