We have stayed in Dominican (with 21 year old daughter in tow) and had a fab holiday. We stayed in Riu Bachata, near Puerto Plata. Link here: - http://www.thomson.co.uk/destinations/caribbean/dominican-republic/dominican-rep-puerto-plata/bahia-maimon/hotels/clubhotel-riu-bachata.html

As you can see it is a 3 hotel shared resort and Merengue is very nice too, didn't make it as far as Mambo. Absolutely loads to do, including swimming with dolphins!
As you can see it has excellent reviews - hopefully this will provide you with a reasonable option.

Thanks. I really appreciate the reply.

I've taken a look at that one. Looks good but not on the beach. I'd really like somewhere with a beach front location so my two teens can go off on their own without any hassle whilst I do my own thin
I go to cuba a lot and usually go to the cayo's which all have beachfront locations. Best time to go is March/April or Sept/Oct as it is hottest and costs around £700pp for 2 weeks.

Thomas Cook is the tour op.

    Happy Holiday :D
  • thanks to everyone for their replies and contributions.

I have now narrowed it down to 2 - they are the Iberostar paraiso mayo/lindo or the Barbelo Maya beach/caribbe

Has anyone else stayed at either of these and can give me an idea of which would be better for a 17 and 15 year old? Everything's important I suppose but views on the beach/pool/food and location and water sports etc would really be appreciated

    thansk again

Are there free courtesy buses to Playa del Carmen from those resorts?

another vote for mexico , we went last year for the first time and are planning to go back this year
we stayed at the catalonia riviera maya in puerto aventuras, great hotel , right on beach (also have use of the sister hotel next door) , lovely and relaxing , amazing choice of food , choice of 5 A la carte restaurants .there is entertainment on every night in the theatre , 3 or 4 swimming pools inc swim up bar . fun and games during the day for teenagers to keep them busy . great spa - which is fairly priced , i haggled them down from $90 to $55 .free watersports ,dolphinarium in resort (5 min walk) i could go on and on .
We needed a relaxing holiday after a very stressful time and this fitted the bill perfectly . im not usually one for AI holidays , but this hotel has made me have a rethink .
Been to Dom Rep and this was miles better

  • Great. I'll take a look at that one too. I'm in exactly the same position. Deserve (well I think I do) a break, not a huge fan off AI's (but can't make a proper judgement because I've not been) but it seems to be the best option to suit us all.

    thanks again
  • Thanks again - but I know it will be very very hot etc and still prefer that to being very very cold and very very wet
You do realise you are looking at rainy season in the Caribbean?!
I was going to mention the heat but realised others had already mentioned it. It's not so much the heat, it's the humidity. When we were over there last end of Sep it was 100%. I've lived in Greece and been to Spain in the middle of summer and believe me, it is nothing like the heat/humidity in those places. If you like sitting outside at night sweating then it's perfect! :) You can get away from it in the daytime by way of the pool.
And if the sea is choppy then they will red flag it and not let you in.
Anyway, whatever you decide, have a lovely time :)
