Thanks everyone. Up to now Mexico a very very hot and very very sticky front runner

Any other suggestions for places people have stayed and have enjoyed or disliked would be greatly appreciated.. I'm checking them all out0 -
Stayed on dominican. Best holiday ive had. Great for tours and days out (guessing most are like this in carribean). Went on the monster truck tour and when your driving through the mountains/forests its like being in jurassic park (think it mightve been filmed their actaully?!?!)0

I would recommend Cancun, particularly for a first trip to the Caribbean. My girlfriend and I stayed in the Riu Caribe which has a fantastic beach and great food. We liked it so much we went back two years later and had an equally great time.
Cancun is also perfectly safe when you leave the hotel, probably safer than the UK. I'd be a little wary when out and about in Cuba/Dominican, particularly after dark, although from what I am lead to believe there is very little to do outside the hotel complex anyway.0 -
Cancun - thanks for that. I was thinking of their as the transfer wasn't so long until I mentioned in work that I was looking at Mexico and someone said not Cancun?0

I have been to Mexico and Dominican, out of the two Mexico wins hands down. I personally did not enjoy the Dominican as much and would not go back there.
Mexico was great though! We stayed the first time at the Bahia Principie and the second time at the Catalonia. We went out to Playa Car one night and it was really buzzing and we felt really safe.
The food was great, the people genuinely friendly, the sea was warm and the beaches very nice.
I would recommend going to the Riviera Maya any day of the week.
Have a great time wherever you go!

My son, who's 16, and I went to mexico last july, we stayed at the Iberostar Paraiso Maya on the Riviera Maya. We loved it, we've been to Antigua, Jamaica and Providenciales but Mexico has been our favourite. We don't normally go back to the same place but we are going there again in october. Have a look at First Choice they do the Lindo and the del Mar, the whole complex has 5 hotels all together. There's lots of swimming pools and the beach is lovely, lots of big waves, not a calm flat sea. It's not too far from the airport or from lots of excursions.toffeentom wrote: »Thanks everyone. I was hoping someone would recommend the Iberostar. That's top of my list at the moment. Is there any one in particular which is better to stay in than the others - or any one to avoid?
Thanks again for the recommendation0 -
minimad1970 - Just checked out the Maya on tripadvisor and it looks perfect. Now going to check out the cost - thanks again0

We're actually staying at the Lindo this time as the Maya wasn't available when we are going. Apart from recent reviews for the Lindo they are normally very positive. All of the hotels have pretty good reviews. First Choice now seem to have the Maya available to book, but online only apparently. My travel agent phoned to ask about it as when we booked the weren't doing the Maya at all. I would happily stay at any of them. The Lindo or Maya would probably be better for the time of year you are going as they have airconditioned restaurants and I don't think the others do.toffeentom wrote: »minimad1970 - Just checked out the Maya on tripadvisor and it looks perfect. Checked out the price of this hotel (Paraiso Maya) with first choice on line and it's a little (a lot) over my budget. Looked at booking flights myself and booking with the hotel direct but that's even more expensive. Anyone got any ideas to get the cost down? I usually book everything independently of a travel agent so I'm happy with that.0
