Tattycath I don't have the grand caliber but I would like one, what has put me off is the price of the grand dies. Are you looking at making odd shaped cards with nesties? If not to be honest I would recommend the cuttlebug or bigshot instead.

It is on my to buy list after my holiday so in a couple of months time I hope to have one so could let you know then (as long as I can get it into the house without the OH seeing) :D

I love my caliber and my cuttlebug but if I had to choose I would have my bug for its smaller size, which means its easier to store and also take less room on workdesk when being used. The caliber I do use for the larger grand dies and being able to do multi small dies at the same time. Not much help really am I :) unless you intend to do lots of large diecuts I would go for the bug

Thanks OAP1945. How big is the bug and the caliber please? I want to experiment really but fancy the sound of the Caliber. I want to be able to make professional looking cards and other stuff -but I'm carp at cutting out and large dies sound ideal for what creations I have in mind

Thanks Mad-Frog. I'm relatively new to cardmaking and I've read that the spellbinders is compatible with other dies-I don't really want to buy something now and then upgrade to a caliber if the caliber can do it all.

I can so relate to this. I told my OH I wanted one for Christmas but now I've decided I don't want to wait 'til Christmas and would like one in the next month or so.
If the Caliber is no bigger than a sewing machine, space won't be a problem. If it's bigger I'll have to have a re-think and a sort out to make some space :o (so my OH doesn't moan about me filling the house up ) :rotfl:

More questions...Is anyone a member of create and craft please? What do you think about their products and pricing etc? I've just joined and received my first lot of Luxury foiled card. Now I'm itching to do something with it but want to get a spellbinders or similar first.

    Thanks tattycath (love the name).
I'm not up to the standard of some of the fab crafters on here but I enjoy making them and 'keeps me out of mischief when it's raining (we have an allotment) :)

I have just done a bit of measuring and here are the sizes approx

    Caliber
    footprint 16inch x 8inch including handle
the plates are 12in long so you would need to allow space for the whole plate to come out of the back comfortably I think about 14/15 inch.

    Cuttlebug
footprint 10inchx6inch incl handle ( I have the older version and the handle does not detach/fold)
once you open the "wings"(the shelf for putting your plates on) it measures 10x12.

I have a shelf which is 16 inch deep and can use the bug on that but have to use the caliber on my desk as the roll through space is not deep enough
HTH and does not confuse you even more

tattycath - re your question about create and craft - I personally think they are incredibly overpriced for example - spellbinders floral tag dies C&C price £19.99 plus postage
same thing from Maddylisa 15.60 delivered

Just used that as an example - I tend to watch the shows then google to find a better price :)

As far as I know a grand calibur won't emboss it will only cut and am not sure if it will take the sizzix thick dies and sizzlits - I have a cuttlebug myself :p
Officially a non-smoker but still rounder than recommended :p

    Not confused yet. :)

Thanks for this-never heard of Maddylisa

Just read up on the grand calibur and apparently it does cut and emboss - but as you say, it won't take the thick dies.
So now I'm really torn as to which one to go for... The calibur or the cuttlebug...
I've just been reading Handy Hippo Crafts and their feedback for the grand calibur are very positive. Apparently you can cut larger things with it - so I think I'll just go for it and get the grand calibur. Now to try and find the best price...
Thank you all for your input. :D

  • The best place for one is Oyster Stamps as I have been researching prices as I want to buy one. The only reason I haven;t bought one yet is seeing the posts about those that have broken. :(
