Yep, Android (and other smartphones) are permanently online.
  • Not aimed at Rusty, from other posts I know he/she knows their stuff but be aware that while "always on" is a good description of the type of connection, just like your home internet connection, you can manually disable/enable it in the settings.

(in fact I spend 99% of my time with the internet data connection set to "off", and only enable it while I want to be using internet functions, as do many other people with smartphones)

I know it's a very beginner point to make, but you seemed like a beginner so I thought it sensible just to add.
Best of luck by the way, hope you make good use of it. :)
  • I too have an htc and if you go to your settings there is and option to knock your mobile internet off.thios is what i do i just turn it on and off as i want it,i do the same with my wifi it also saves the battery.hope this helps

I would install JuiceDefender Pro, and using this you can set an overnight period where the 3G doesn't turn on (mine is midnight - 7 or 8am I think) and also to have the 3G off unless the screen is on / a set interval for it to turn on for a minute to check e-mails, update weather etc (mine is set to 1 min every 30 mins). And the other clever thing it'll do is turn on your wi-fi connection at known sites (so home, work, girlfriends mum's in my case) and default to this wi-fi connection leaving your 3G off.

How much does this PAYG cost you and what is your monthly usage?

Yes, this is pretty normal. My Android phone regularly goes online to update apps, check email, pick up news headlines and weather info, etc.

I have an app installed on my handset called My Data Manager (Free) which lets me know how much data I've used via the mobile network and WiFi each month and what it was used for.

Not that data usage really bothers me because I have uncapped Internet at home and on my mobile.

Assuming all Android handsets are the same, you can switch off Wifi or mobile data access by pulling down the menu from the top of the screen and disabling them individually.

I'm a low user as I'm not allowed to use at work (they give me a work mobile but I dont use it for my own use)

I'm on orange dolphin which gives 400 free texts and 100mb internet as long as I top up £10 a month. I only pay calls at 25p a minute.
