You may have answered your own question - Hoover!
Most of the recent threads on this and other forums about Dyson vacuum cleaners haven't been very positive.
They don't maintain the constant suction power over it's lifetime as claimed. This may be partly due to the lifetime (non-replaceable) filter being clogged up.
Have you considered Vax bagless vacuum cleaners? They do some excellent upright models which are much lighter than Dyson ones but just as powerful. If my post hasn't helped you, then don't click the 'Thanks' button!

Bought one and it went back a few days later. Bought Miele instead. Dyson man came to check the hoover when I complained to them the suction wasn't great and he refused to compare it to Miele.
The dyson was bulky and felt like it was built with lego bits (it probably was) and the suction wasn't impressive. Plus hated how I had to empty the dust in the bin and the spillages, being covered with the same dust that I was trying to get rid of.0 -

I've just been looking at the Vax amd they seem quite good!0 -
I would go to one of the Currys type shops to have a look at them and see the weight and size and quality as it is hard to tell online.
It is useful to read the 1 and 2 star reviews rather than the positive reviews on Amazon as apart from a few unlucky people and moaners they are more revealing about the product and problems you may have with it.0 -
i dont like dysons, they are too expensive for nothing, and too heavy, I had one and barely could carry it up the stairs. I bought Panasonic, take a look, its definitely cheaper and 2000W, good for any carpet.0

We have had a couple. The first one was driven over accidentally, and a hoover before and in the middle.
They are way more powerful than either hoover.
The first was a UK built one the current one is from the far east DC14.
Have used Henrys and whilst they are undoubtedly robust not a patch on the suction.
Our Dyson has a rotating brush bar, some have one you can deactivate. Easy to empty, we tend to do it into a plastic bag first, before putting it in the bin. Less escaped dust and certainly better than the hoover reusable bag we had first time round.
We have two dogs and haven't encountered the doggy smell.
If you get a blockage, they have easily re moveable components to clear. Filter cleaned 6-12 months, easily done, no noticeable drop in performance with day to day cleaning.
Possibly a little heavy depending on your stature.
Vax IMO are not so good.
I would buy one again I would also consider one of the "green" (coloured) ecomax Panasonic, bags put me off though.
They are more expensive so are Miele, as for quality no worse than anything else mass produced these days."If you act like an illiterate man, your learning will never stop... Being uneducated, you have no fear of the future.".....

nice vacuum cleaners. sh it build quality.
youll be replacing parts for the next few years.
then youll buy a red henry.
I have a love/hate relationship with mine.
Love the power/suction cleaning ability and love the super long hose especially great for doing stairs.
Hate the build quality, poor quality plastic always bits breaking off!0 -
I'm also looking at a possibly buying a Dyson, my mother has had one for around 10 years and last year decided to get a new one. She gave me the old one and it has been fantastic, with two medium haired German Shepherds who moult a lot and four kids to pick up after and OH who loves his DIY it is the best cleaner we have ever had. We have been through a range of different uprights and a Henry, also an industrial one and none picked up as well as the 10 year old Dyson. We used to buy up to 5 new cleaners a year.
The only reason we need a new one now is because OH dropped ours down the steps outside when he was cleaning out the car and it's cracked several parts on the tumble down, it still works just not too well. We have thought about getting parts and fixing it but without knowing if there's any damage inside we don't want to risk it.
Before having this one I would never have considered spending that sort of money on a cleaner but even if it only lasted a year it will outlive any other one we've tried so will be well worth it.0
