I grew up in a home where nobody cared about shoes in the house (although if it was raining, snowing, muddy etc. we would take them off).

Am currently undergoing re-education by DH who does NOT like shoes in the house. :rotfl::rotfl::rotfl:

However, I've never taken offence if someone asked me to take my shoes off, sometimes I ask if I'm not sure. Their house, their rules. :D

I don't have a shoes policy, nor do any of my friends. We all tend to kick off shoes eventually for comfort, not for policy.

I would feel very awkward to be asked to remove my shoes. Short of saying 'Sorry, I don't know you or whoever lives in this house, I have no idea what I might pick up off your floor - ICK!!!', I'm not even sure how I'd refuse - because I would certainly refuse.

I would have no objection to wearing shoe covers though :).

ETA: oooh, and please never offer me a pair of slippers belonging to a random stranger _pale_

Why are you visiting people you don't know? Is it your job to go to stranger's houses?

On that point, I wouldn't ask someone 'doing a job', e.g. the meter reader, to remove shoes. And ambulance staff (for example) aren't actually allowed to remove theirs.

But friends? Sure, why not? I don't think it's odd. In fact my friends don't even ask. They just bark 'Shoes off!' at me as soon as I step in the door.

Personally you can do what you want in my hovel. TBH, the street's probably cleaner than my floors anyway :o

Was wondering the best way of asking this question. I have a no shoes policy at my house. When I come in I take my out door shoes off on the mat at the back of the door.
I would like all my visitors to do the same. But no matter how I ask them to do it, some people seem to still get the hump.

How could I ask people to remove their shoes without offending them.?

As I've thought maybe its how or what I'm saying that I'm getting wrong.

we have a mat and a shoe rack in our utility room...we always use the utility room door to answer the door bell..... I also invested in some of those fluffy sock/bed sock things from primark (50p a pair) and i have 3 pairs (still new on the card) sat on the shoe rack. When ppl come in who havent been before i simply say 'choose a pair (of new socks) to call your own' so they automatically take their shoes off lol. Then i just tag that persons name into the socks til they next come.... we only get the odd visitor who hasnt been beofre or who is funny about taking shoes off... i dont offer every single person socks lol, although i bet i have 10 pairs in the utility room all tagged up for regular guests :D

ok some ppl say im OTT for doing it but my ex MIL would never take her shoes off as she never wore socks and didnt like her toes being on show, so i kinda got the idea from her.... At 50p a pair its not expensive and it stops people wearing shoes, i think its the 'what on earth is all this about' thoughts going round in their heads tho that makes them compliant :rotfl::rotfl:

If anyone gets 'funny' about it i just say its because I have young children as well as cream carpets and i wouldnt want anyone to bring something in on their shoes and baby get to it before me... if they still wont take their shoes off then they sit in the kitchen and dont go into the rest of the house - simple. My house, my rules!

Brians daughter, I have done exactly the same regarding those slipper sock thingys. I have them by the door.

To those who said they would feel offended awkard etc. If you can see that my floor is absolutely spotless and our house is really warm (too warm). I offer new slipper socks. Would you still feel awkward and not like removing out door shoes?

TBH if they wont do it dont let them in lol. As i say, i keep people who refuse firmly in the kitchen....

If i was visiting anywhere and they asked me to do x i would.... i have a friend who has a pure white leather suite and if you go with jeans on she asks you to pop a throw over the sofa then sit on that so the dye doesnt get on the leather....it does annoy me sometimes but its her house, her rules! :T:T:T

When I was working at BT, we weren't allowed to take our boots off. I don't know if this has changed since I left though

Well, it would still hurt me to do it on a bad day...physical pain, not my feelings:rotfl::rotfl: in fact...socks are really hard.

I think that's the other thing, often I wear shoes I can slip on with no socks because it's not painful for me, but putting socks on can be a but of a nightmare tbh. They can be quite hard if you are not coordinated or have mild mobility issues.

I like people to feel comfy in my house, so dont bother whether they take their shoes off or not (obviously if they are really muddy, but that's different!) However, if you do take your shoes off, be warned that you'll end up with socks + doghair, and probably have a German Shepherd trying to nick your socks too!

I can't see it would cause offence to anyone, we have a huge entrance mat that is wedged in beforethe laminate flooring starts and it seems pretty obvious to anyone who comes in to take them off there and then walk on the floor, we have never had a prob and as been said all the contractors have to put those silly looking plastic bags over their shoes as virgin media so happily told me the story about the other day:rotfl::rotfl:
