  • This is a no shoe household, I was brought up in a no shoe household, my partner was brought up in a no shoe household, my parents were both brought up in no shoe households etc. Even though I'm disabled and in pain my dislike of footware inside means that I still take off my shoes in houses which means sitting down, getting help etc. and taking splippers with me. Being in a home equals socks or slippers to me as that is how I was brought up. We only have carpet in our bedroom, everywhere else is laminate (sp?) or tile but cleaning them with water is a danger for me so it easier to just keep them clean and only mop them when it is needed rather than every time someone leaves! Shoes/boots/sandles etc = outside, socks/slippers/inside only sandles etc = inside.

I am thinking about getting those shoe covers! I know a few select people (workers, people with splints etc) can't take off their shoes so I think they would be a real help.

I've never had anyone be weird about asking to take their shoes off but then they know I do so when going to theirs.

By the way my parents are more 'weird' about footware than most people - they have wood floors all downstairs and although they 'allowed' footware inside for a mass gathering (after which they done a full clean on the floors) they did make it very clear to all those wearing heels that they had to take them off and put on the provided new slippers as heels (slim heels are worst) cause damage to wood floor. This was a BBQ so an outside and inside gathering.

Houses are for living in, floors are for walking on. Neither are works of art to be preserved.

Unless I have mud or snow on my shoes you really shouldn't ask me to take them off anymore than I should ask you to take your top off.

You sound like someone I can learn from. My problem usually is that I find bending and sitting on the floor hard....sometimes i cannot get back up! usually I can bend if sitting on a stair, a chair can be too high. How do you mange this well? :). Also, I couldn't do the shoe covers because I often cannot balance on one leg.:o

I kind of have this dilemma too. I live in a building where the communal areas are carpeted but I have wood flooring in my flat and when the manager visits he often leaves marks off his shoes, which I jokingly mentioned to him once but he denied they were off his shoes, but I've never asked him to remove his shoes, tho some family do this without asking. Its a bit annoying when I have to rewash the floors cos of marks. I never ask workmen to remove shoes/boots either.

I put my shoes on as soon as I can in the morning. I need them for support and I don't feel comfortable walking without them. I do have slippers but still prefer having shoes on. I seem to go all out of whack if I have bare feet or i'm wearing slippers.

What would someone do if they asked a guest to remove their shoes and that person had really honking feet? Would they ask them to put their shoes back on again. I remember one time my auntie slipped her shoes off in the back of the car and I thought I smelt a gas leak!

I wouldn't find the request offensive and usually ask if they'd like me to remove my shoes anyway.

However, I'm the opposite. I prefer people to leave their shoes on in my house (sweaty socks on my carpet or floors - no thanks!) since I'd rather sweep up any dirt than think about grubby socks.

I also feel a tad naked when I take my own off in someone else's house since I always wear slippers at home (well Ugg boots or flip flops as slippers) and like my feet to feel cosy. I particularly dislike people walking round in bare feet (usually kids) since I can't tell you how many people have happily walked around my house with verucas on their feet! That makes me feel sick and incredibly angry (at their selfishness) all at the same time. I think that's what's done it for me, I sometimes have to ask people several times to 'oh leave your shoes on (please!)' now.

Have to agree with this. Although we have new light carpets, I'm happy for people to leave their shoes on as long as they are clean. People do have a tendency to remove them, probably when they see the carpet, but as you say it can be cleaned. One time someone came in and took their warm shoes off to reveal bare feet (with bunions if that makes it worse) then said they had socks with them and would put those on. I'd rather they'd just keep the shoes on that have to go through all that bare feet on my carpets scenario. I don't mind people's socks on the carpet, but I don't feel the need for them to remove shoes if they are normal cleanish shoes. I also would feel uncomfortable if I went to someone's house with sandals on or pumps with no socks and had to remove the shoes/sandals and go around barefoot, or in tights for example. It does just feel sort of naked. I don't go around hotel rooms with no shoes on either, with the thought of others having done so and possible veruccas, athlete's foot etc.

I do not mind removing my shoes (although you would have to ask me, I'd never think to do it ), but the thought of recycled slippers, which some people have mentioned, makes me cringe. Although once I went somewhere and had to remove my shoes, I had no socks on and they had tiled floors, ny feet were b100dy freezing!

Agree, the slippers idea makes me cringe too. And why on earth would someone want your shoes off on a tiled floor. Isn't that about the most durable surface possible!!!

Because they were of the 'if you're inside, shoes off' school of thought, the same as many on here:D
