How do you link to just once FB photo and keep everything else hidden?
There’s a link at the bottom of the photo.
Twitter is public, Facebook is private, except if I choose, in my discretion, to share (like on this occasion).
Only people logged into MSE and on the NP thread can see the link.

You probably do NEED to go, in the sense that you are thinking of spending £9k x 3=£27k + maintenance of at least £4k a year, so nearly £40k. Most people would want to take a look before committing to a £40k commitment.
If you mean, Can you go to uni without attending an open day, then it depends on the uni and it depends on the course. Lots of course require you to attend an interview, so you would go for the interview and have an open-day experience at the same time. If you couldn't afford to get there then your 6th form may have some money to help you out, but generally you would be expected to pay for it yourself.
When I went I had two interviews, both at Oxford, and both rejected me- pretty sure they put me up in the college overnight and fed me but I had to pay the train fare.
The others just gave me offers without interviews. I went to an open day at Nottingham but no interview. I ended up at UCL which was my second choice, I was so sure I'd get the grades for Nottingham that I didn't bother visiting UCL at all and ended up going there 'blind' when I missed my nottingham offer by 1 grade. I'm still angry about that missed grade 15 years later!0 -
PasturesNew wrote: »But how could students miles away get to the Unis? You're talking about hundreds of miles round trips. Surely not everybody goes, only those with parents with cars/spare cash and those visiting their closest one.
Round this way, I'd imagine most students couldn't afford to go - so their schools couldn't help out everybody.
I guess most people far away then, choose Unis close to them and only one, so only one trip/interview. Or they just forget it and get a job instead.
I'd say that most people can probably afford to pay for a pre-booked day returns to a couple of university interviews. 1/3 off with a young person's railcard. If you're tight for money get the megabus, stay in a travelodge and eat a pot noodle for dinner. Most people can probably get to most major towns and cities in the country and stay the night for around £50 if you've got enough advance notice.0 -
chewy!!
you'll be pleased to know your sage advice had great effect and I've just signed up to a gym.0 -
Is that because you hated the classes!!!
I went to the gym every day on holiday, for 2 hours most days, and still came back 5kg heavier. Furious!0 -

Then people'd know if they were being offered a place or not and could make real decisions. And it'd not be disrupting their normal life when they could have been studying. Open Days take days to get there/back and the cost of travel/accommodation for each one.
Then, with offers/decisions made by the end of September, they'd have Oct-Dec to think about where to live .... and Uni would start in January. It'd also give people a chance to do some temporary work June-December to get a few quid under their belt.
I understand the current logistics but think it mad by design. My DD was taking a gap year so did not apply until after she had her results. Lots of certainty, no drama and a good choice of offers. Why give hormonal young people something else to worry about?0 -

Just what I was thinking. I had interviews at Birmingham and Exeter, I think, or possibly Southampton as well, all of which were timed so I could get there on the train, do the interview (including free lunch), and get home again in a day - although none of them was a particularly long way from Bristol, which was where I was living at the time. My Oxford interview was over a couple of days, but we only had to get ourselves there (train with YP railcard again) - all food and a room overnight in college was provided for interview candidates.Do you know anyone who's bereaved? Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.0
