I can't believe the way prices of halls have increased. DS1's first year hall was just under £4k nearly 4 years ago, now that same accommodation is nearly £5k. 25% increase in 4 years!
His first choice uni has a wide range of accommodation for first years, ranging from £3k to £6.5k! You can guess where he wants to go. :sighs: To be fair I can't see any 18 year old wanting to share a bedroom with a stranger. Even the housing benefit rules would allow an 18 year old their own room!
Sharing is still very common in other parts of the world...the civilised world. I think that is part of the 'want before need' or ..before can afford entitelement culture. Next follows the accusation pointed at ftb bears on the rest of the forum.....what housing they expect afterwards v what they can afford.0 -

Round this way, I'd imagine most students couldn't afford to go - so their schools couldn't help out everybody.
I guess most people far away then, choose Unis close to them and only one, so only one trip/interview. Or they just forget it and get a job instead.
They prioritise their spending, like anyone else, or if they are lucky their parents do. Dh had to come to uk for his open days and university interviews, his parents paid. I had to go, have an interview and prove an ability that involved a physical teat, i drove up stayed with 'a friend' in the nearest cheap hotel then went the next day to do the test, the interview and the open day. Mine was only a two hour drive i think....maybe three.
Efit, teat should read test. They were not interested in my nipples.0 -
Are you feeling better this afternoon silvercar?
I keep feeling i should face thie dr finding mission again myself, but not just yet:D.
I had thought last week i should hone and explain i have a phobia first...but, um, i realise that makes me sound like a nut.0 -
When I was growing up there was more of a tradition of going to a local uni. You knew it, you knew people who'd been there, you commuted from your family home and it was affordable.
I gather it's getting more like that in London now from the point of view that living with your parents is part of the budgeting. In the past when you had a grant it made more sense to move away as you could have a better time for your money in any number of big cities.
Maybe that's the future of HE.
Mind you we're not giving DD much choice here; whichever uni she goes to, near or far, she'll be living away from home. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -
Trying to find a caravan... trouble is, the sites I am on don't tell you how much they are. I do a search, based on rough location/dates and I get, say, 200 results - every one of them says to contact them for further details..... I want to be able to sort them on price. £150-200 ... I'd contact them. £300+ I keep looking. One site, 200 "contact us"... ain't gonna happen.0

In our circle, the mums band together and drive them in groups. Most unis are at most a four hour drive from London -that would take in the large belt of northern unis from Liverpool to Hull and all in between. There is no honour to be had in not knowing a thing that can be known - Danny Baker0 -

We put them on a train, travelling in groups. Booking the ticket well in advance to get the cheap train tickets.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. But there are no jobs and the government is intent on 50% of people going to university.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards.
