All the big wigs get together in parliament, and then her nibbity comes to parliament and gives it the authority to actually start debating stuff. Historically, the Monarch In Parliament is the source of all legislation amd state power in the UK...

In reality these days, the queen reads a speech that the government writes that says what laws it is going to pass over the course of the parliament. it is a chance for the government to say what it is going to do.
So - it's an expensive piece of fluff that nobody needs and just wastes loads of people's time.

    Got it.

It's probably the most productive thing these people do all year, Pastures New. At least it does wonders for the tourist industry.

    Bill Bryson.

I went to a shop and I liked it very much. I went to a supermarket and I liked it very much. I went to the park and I liked it very much. I posted a letter and I liked it very much. Ad infinitum.

I read one of his books which was ok, but I couldn't make it through the second one it really started to grate on me. Probably because it wasn't about nuclear holocaust.

:rotfl:I know what you mean even if I think that's a little harsh.
Try "A short history of nearly everything".
Easily his best IMO. (So long as you're at least mildly interested in science that is)

As an aside went to see 10cc at Symphony Hall on Monday. Brill.

Thanks tom. I may just have a look for that.

    Any other ideas NP?

Edit: Just bought that book on Amazon after looking at a couple of the reviews

The end of mr y fits into two of you categories quite well. Its a good yarn, not heavy, but lets you ponder things more deeply should you wish to. I bought her other books having read it, always a good sign, but they were not, imo, as good.

Also, this is bit of an odd suggestion ..aw..no, its not, title and author have left my head. Its a bestseller, ist ig wha i yhink id to be a trilogy, viva might know. Something about .. Hang on, google image found it for me...

No profound read at all, but sort of super hero - y. And second one seems se to have some time travelly business.

I'd thank that one twice if I could. :)
No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?

    Oh ...

I guess it's hard for Londoners and people familiar with London to understand there are those of us out here for whom it's a far flung foreign land :)

Is that how you see it? From an aspie point of view I answered the question factually.

State Opening of Parliament on TV ... apparently live.

I like the pomp and ceremony - and the history behind it - of those events, but at the same time wonder if it still has a place in a modern democracy.

On the inauguration of the current king of belgium, a member of parliament shouted 'vive la republique!'. I don't see it happening here :)

Yes, jelly's invite was swiftly and factually dismissed. :)

I thought it was funny. :o
