I lived in a village. There was a school in my village, so people at the school came from my village and the surrounding villages. Many kids walked as it was the 3 mile rule to get the free bus, so a lot were walking on narrow, unlit, country roads without pavements to get back to their village right on the borderline of the 3 miles .... hell in winter as the icy blasts came direct from Siberia. Nobody ever died though.

School used to finish at 3:40, or 3:45 back then, so a lot of the winter months they'd have been walking back on unlit roads in the pitch dark.

Loving The Removal Men (channel 5 right now).

Reality TV following Pickfords' removals men going about their job.

They just packed up a Manor House in the home counties. A couple who are moving to another huge mansion they bought near Dublin 8 years ago.

9 men three days to get as far as they have with the packing.

Back to lewdness for a minute. Following an 'interesting' real life proposition this morning do nice people make a fuss when....er, less than charmingly propositioned?

My dad arrived shortly after and my friend dropped her little boy with me, so i told my dad because i did not want to go a certaon route to risk a lewd comment infront of the little boy and my dad was cross i was not reportingit and making a fuss....

I wouldn't make a fuss about a one-off, unless it was very bad. I wouldn't put up with something that kept being repeated, though. You shouldn't have to change your route because you know that otherwise you'd be subjected to comments that weren't suitable in front of children, IMO.

Tyre performance in the wet deteriorates rapidly below about 3mm tread - change yours when they get dangerous, not just when they are nearly illegal (1.6mm).
Oh, and wear your seatbelt. My kids are only alive because they were wearing theirs when somebody else was driving in wet weather with worn tyres.

I'm guessing it's your campers on the drive and one said something rude, so you don't want to walk up your own drive in case they say something rude again.....

I've never heard of David Starkey and wouldn't watch something like Question Time on the telly because most people's discussions/arguments are either of no interest to me, or they've clearly not go t a clue.

I've given up on Question Time. I have the impression the calibre of guests is declining also. Next week Will Young will be in the panel. Woohoo.
I'm all for decent political debate, but QT is just both sides rattling off token party political statements.

This Week (after QT) is more my cup of tea. Intelligent, sometimes witty banter, without the need to score points.

I'm just not interested in the sort of things these sort of people discuss and debate. Most Govt policies aren't changing or doing anything for me, so I am not interested in either side's VI viewpoint - especially when you realise that most things being discussed are either not understood, or won't even happen... it's just hot air and pointless.

I'm afraid I don't know. I wasn't a parent back then, and I didn't go to a state school when I was a kid myself. Perhaps other NP may know.

I think there are some schools that measure walking distance. The schools round where I live all seem to do it as the crow flies, though. I expect it's easier for the LEA's computer to do it that way, and it eliminates arguments on the grounds that the computer hasn't chosen the shortest walking route. I love the idea of a doddery old bloke with a wheel, though. :)

The Greenwich ruling put an end to catchment areas per se. It was found to be discriminatory that children in one borough who lived nearer to a school in the next borough couldn't get a place.

Round here they used to measure distance by "safe walking route" then some parents demanded H&S assessments of what was safe, now its crow flight.

Do only crows fly in straight lines?

i do watch QT from time to time. my favourite bit is when they accidently select someone a bit nuts in the audience to give a comment, and they just make a completely incomprehensible point about a completely different subject, like the funding changes to their son's scout club when you're talking about nuclear disarmament or something.

this week is ok, but they have billy bragg on there far far too much for my liking. i suppose it is the bbc though....

is this right LIR? some council staff have come to repair the road, parked on your drive without asking your permission, and then one of them has decided some verbal abuse is in order?

if so, then i suggest making a massive fuss about it, i hope they all get sacked.
