Just a quick report back... my policy started at 00.01 on the 24th and my car is currently not showing on the MID

Which is especially great, as I often drive through an area where the police do insurance checks....

Insurers are given time to update MID - it doesn't happen the second your policy starts.

(As you seem worried about being checked, you can short circuit problems by keeping your cert in your wallet with you)

Yep, I took my certificate with me as soon as I realised my car appeared to be uninsured.

IMHO, 24 hours is long enough to update the MID - especially when the policy was purchased 10 days previous to its start date. As I work in technology, I find the inability to do this simple thing rather worrying.

If I get stopped by the Police, its a waste of my time and theirs - as well as a waste of public money.

They can only update the MID from the policy start date, not the date you buy the policy!

(Until the start date, MID shows your current policy)
