That in its self is a very good reason for taking the course, its a good refresher for your driving skills if you go with a positive attitude.

Just to point out that the speedo deviation of 10%, is fully deliberate. It's to account for things such as driver height and seat position, which will affect the angle at which you view the dial.

Connecting to my cars ECU, the speed reading directly from the ECU is pretty much spot on with the GPS speed, but it's still 10% lower than the speed shown on the dash.

Just got a speeding ticket for doing 60mph on the M25, on a bit of motorway that had been temporarily reduced to 50mph. It was 11.30pm at night and I did not see any roadworks, roadworkers, speed restriction signs or road cones which would have led me to realise that I should be going 50mph.

Just 10mph over the limit and 10mph under the normal M25 motorway speedlimit. The notice says 3 penalty points too, so they want £60 and 3 penalty points - which presumably adds to my insurance costs next year (do I have to tell them this year?)
Does it impede my hiring a car abroad too?

I am pretty upset. I never speed in urban or peri-urban areas where anyone could be injured and there was hardly any traffic on the M25 last saturday night when I was trapped.
Is there any point in challenging this? I've never had penalty points before. how long do they stay on the licence?

Should have gone to specsavers

My neighbour drives more than 50 000km a year for work, mostly on motorways in the UK. He says there's police guidelines which allow a 10% margin of error + 2mph. He says he's gone past speed guns going 80 on a normal motorway without being stopped. So I am being prosecuted for 3mph which is very harsh re the 3 points. The govt has plans to clamp down on the guidelines so even 1mph over the limit can be prosecuted but they are controversial and are not yet law. Motoring orgs don't want drivers to be constantly looking at their speedometers and not the road.

It's not 3mph over the limit though is it? It is 3mph over the prosecution guidelines which is a good bit higher than the limit.

If it was 60mph it is 10mph over the posted speed limit, and I think most people would think 10mph over a speed limit in roadworks is a stick on for a ticket.

Yes it is annoying if you've not seen the signs- but you just have to take it on the chin. If your friend keeps driving fast there is nothing to suggest that one day those cameras and police that don't catch him might too!
