DFS Sofa unable to cancel order!

I went to DFS on the 2nd of Jan to try to buy a sofa on credit. We placed the order for the sofa and awaited the answer in regards to the credit. However on Sunday the lady rang us up to say that the credit was not accepted in my bf name and to try mine so i did and i got a call today to say that i couldn't get credit. Therefore i then asked to cancel the order but the lady said that this was not possible as she has ordered the sofa and it said on a message we had to listen in store that we are not allowed to cancel. We are obviously not in a position to pay for the sofa or else we would not have applied for credit, and i do not want to ask a family member to take on the debt. Apparently our options are to task a family member to apply in there name or pay a £180 deposit and get the sofa after 4 years of paying off the debt?(Do not want to do this)
I suppose what i am asking are what are the chances if getting this canceled?

What does the paperwork say ?
Surely they would not order your sofa until credit has been cleared ?0 -
The paper work is mostly about the agreement with Santander for the credit which we do not have.
The DFS part states that its a legally binding contract but nothing about cancellation.0 -
What was said in the store? Was anything mentioned by you about only being able to go ahead if the credit was accepted? You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means - Inigo Montoya, The Princess Bride0

Tell them you don't have £180 and no body else is going to help you see what they say0

We were handed an electronic pad which was playing a message to us and i do not recall the message noting anything in regards to us still having to pay for the sofa if credit was not accepted.
I will try to speak to the manager tomorrow and tell him my situation.
Thanks for your help0 -
I have a feeling they will put pressure on you, just insist you have no money that's why you wanted credit !
Good luck keep us updated0 -

did you sign anything that said you couldn't cancel?
It sounds like she's trying to force the sale through so she gets her commission, or ballsed up and ordered before getting the ok on credit.
Although it'd be worth asking what happens if you take the 'pay deposit and wait 4 years option for the sofa'. Will you get a four year old sofa or will you get a new one? if you get a new one then it won't be the one she's apparently already ordered.0 -
Basically if you cannot get credit and pay for the sofa then they should cancel the roder.
Theoretically, if you have agreed to purchase then they could send you the sofa and chase you for the money.
Better you go in now and just tell them there is no way you can pay - dont pay any extra money.
they should have let the credit cleared before ordering the sofa and chances are they havent actually ordered it.
if getting credit was a condition of purchase then you should be able to cancel but by the soudns of it you cannot remember so is irrelevant.0 -

I totally agree with this.
Ask the salesman to take credit out in his name and you will pay him
I am often not a fan of suggesting trading standards but I think SCS are trying to be very cute here and this nees thoroughly investigated
I think this is so serious Martin should look into it, imagine if they tried this when buying new cars.
(If you ordered and tried to get credit elsewhere to pay, then of course it would be your problem)0 -
i think dfs salesman get paid commission on what they sell? It almost sounds like the shop assistant got too over eager and put the order through before they got the credit check reply back. I wouldn't pay them a penny and complain to the head office about this.
Incidently the option where you pay monthly and receive the sofa after 4 years is one of the ridiculous things I have ever heard! This is a system account and does not represent a real person. To contact the Forum Team email forumteam@moneysavingexpert.com0
