Halifax Clarity CC - cash withdrawals

We have used Halifax Clarity card many times in France for purchases and cash withdrawals. We always make a payment to cover the cash withdrawals as soon as possible and the payment repays the cash withdrawal and not the earlier purchases which are paid in full each month by DD. This is the best way to get cash and purchases abroad. It is worth paying a little more than the amount withdrawn just in case of currency fluctuations.

Thanks Knightstyle, just another quick question. Do you usually make the payment for the cash withdrawal after the payment shows up in your online statement or do you transfer the money instantly by working out how much you withdrew (i.e. taking credit available from the credit limit)?

You're right; it's not a specific law (yet). However, if a card issuer deviates from the current gentlemen's agreement, then it could probably be enforced under the Unfair Terms in Consumer Contracts Regulations 1999.

Hmmm.... not so sure about that. The regs have been around for a number of years and during that time I don't think the payment hierarchy thing was ever challenged - even when it was much worse than it is now (ie the CCs were free to apply payments to lower interest balances first). Applying payments to statemented balances before unstatemented balances doesn't seem unfair to me even if it is against the spirit of a gentlemen's agreement that they entered into with the OFT/each other etc.

Well I don't know about the law but Halifax definitely use any early repayment to pay off the highest interest outstanding balance, i.e. cash withdrawals. We have been doing this since last April, never had a problem.

Interesting - have you actually worked out how many days interest you were charged in a case where you've made a withdrawal & extra payment to "cover" it in the period between your statement date and DD date?

I'd expect them to allocate the payment to the statement first, resulting in interest being charged from the withdrawal to the DD date, not the withdrawal to the extra payment date. Assuming the statement balance is greater than the withdrawal.

If you want to minimise the interest you can also pre load the card before you go away.

Note this is against the t&c but they dont seem to worry about it (yet).

Bit risky asking for a sort code and account number on an internet forum don't you think?

Anyway, your question is answered both on the back of your statement and on their website...

    You presume correctly.

I was looking for a confirmation as I sent a 'test' payment of £5.00 to the account on the page you link yo but it has never shown on my credit card statement and jsut wanted to check the clarity was the same account number.

I don't think it's particularly risky asking for a sort code and account number - I would always double check before sending a payment, I'm not an idiot!

My statements from Halifax don't have the account details 0 only reference is pay from a halifax current account...

    From the Halifax link:

    Bank Sort Code no 80-20-45
    Bank Account no 00213765
Your reference number which is your 16 digit account number.

Well I make the payment as soon as I can get to a phone, usually the same day. That way my interest charges are just a few pence even though we withdraw several hundred € a month. We always pay bills by card if possible.

So you're saying the payment details are not given (in distinguishing blue font) in the "Telephone Banking with another bank" and "Standing Order" sections of the "How to pay" information at the bottom right of the reverse of page 2 of 2 of your statement pack? Very strange.
