Want to improve my Sony PC. Approx 10yrs old. Very slow from startup often taking 5+min from first switching on.

The only hardware upgrade its had is RAM bringing it to 1.75GB. Software, I run AGV free, Advanced System Care and Spybot.

Following the speed up sticky.

Someone with more knowledge than me will probably be along soon, but my opinion would be to replace AVG with Avast (smaller and quicker).

    These can go from startup:-
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [QuickTime Task] "C:\PROGRAM FILES\QUICKTIME\QTTASK.EXE" -atboottime
    O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Adobe ARM] "C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\ARM\1.0\AdobeARM.exe"
:wall: Flagellation, necrophilia and bestiality - Am I flogging a dead horse? :wall:

Any posts are my opinion and only that. Please read at your own risk.

As far as I can see you have two problems.

It's 10 years old, PCs were a lot slower back then

You have under 2Gb RAM - it's barely enough. Upgrading to 4Gb will help.

    Ninth Anniversary
Depending on whether the OS is 32 or 64-bit, it'll only recognise around 2-3gb of RAM if you upgrade it and it's on the 32-bit version.

It is 10 years old too, which is pushing it :)

    Really.

Even Microsoft say that the minimum requirement is 1.5Mb the OP has 1.75Mb which is one of the main reasons it's slow.

  • Still going through the process. Malwarebytes stows no problems.

Ignore this it's complete rubbish. I'm trying to do too many things at once.

In theory 1.75 should be enough but Windows does like a lot of memory.

You seem to be very confused or is it that you simply can't read?
    • At least 64 megabytes (MB) of RAM (128 MB is recommended)
    • At least 1.5 gigabytes (GB) of available space on the hard disk

It seems your the one who can't read. See my post above yours.

  • Right, done all 12 steps, still took a long time to boot. Running seems slightly improved though certainly not fast.
