Insurance at address #1, kept overnight at address #2 save 60% insurance - legal?
Have tried to find an answer to this on the forum so far but have not found this question being answered.
Is it legal to have V5 for my car registered at my parents address (Fylde Coast), insure it with their address and specify it as kept overnight at my address (Manchester), everything being in my name?
My premium dives from £1,200 to £500 doing this, even when declaring the vehicle will be kept overnight in Manchester.
Seems fair enough to me as I am contactable at this address and I am stating it is kept overnight in Manchester.
TIA all.

If the vehicle is kept at address 2 overnight as stated then it wouldn't cause a problem, but if it is being kept at address 1 but you are saying it is kept at address 2 when the vehicle is not kept there then that is a serious misrepresentation of the facts and effectively amounts to fraud."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

I don't see how it could be illegal. You've told them what's going on, and they've agreed to insure you on those terms - what else is there to consider?
If I remember rightly, insurance companies tend to insist your policy matches the V5 address anyway, so they have to allow that kind of thing. How else would students keep there cars insured when they're living in temporary accommodation?0 -
Yes Trebor, address #2 is my flat and address #1 is my parent's place. So it would be kept overnight at address #2, my flat, but yet I would be contactable at address #1.
To provide only my flat as address and kept at overnight address, my quotes are approx £1200. To provide parents address and (truthfully) kept at my flat address overnight, my quotes are £500.0 -
If your permanent address is your flat then you would have to insure the car there. To insure it at your parents address to save money would be fraud."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

Lostsheep, that was my thoughts too. But I did think that insurance companies will find any excuse not to pay out and so if I ever did need to claim, I worry they might say "why is it registered X and kept 50 miles away..we're not paying out...insurance is void" etc. I don't want to defraud anyone.0

If you're declaring where the car is kept truthfully, it's not fraud to have a different correspondence address. I know several people who do this as they work away, or travel, and want bills picked up and paid.0

Just to clarify, I do reside at address #2, i.e. bills come to address #2, I am on the electoral roll address #2, but yet I am contactable at address #1 (parents). So overnight the car is kept at address #2 and I would state this on the policy, but yet I would give address #1 as the policy address.0

If the relevant information has been disclosed to the insurance company and they have accepted it and provided insurance then I can't see the problem.
The OP would be well advised to ensure there is something in writing from the insurer so that their position is covered should there be any disputes in future.0 -

In those circumstances you will need to insure the car at address #2."You should know not to believe everything in media & polls by now !"

You have answered your own question here, you state that you specified that you keep it at your Manchester address if you mean you specified to your insurance company and that they are happy to insure you then yes it is legal, however if you not told your insurance company this information and they find out, if you do need to make a claim they could and more than likely will void your insurance.0
