Heard tonight TK Max is pulling out of Main Street and moving to a unit at Bloomfield, also Argos is closing Flagship store when they open Argos Extra store at Bloomfield both probably in vacant units over where Laser was.0

But but if TKmaxx leave I won't have anywhere to buy weird things on a Sunday0 -

I started trying to count the vacant units in Bloomfields but I ran out of fingers and toes.
Dresswell (Double unit)
Streetwise
D2
The cafe beside Goldsmiths
Kids Next (which has been so many shops in the last few months e.g. last incarnation was a sports shop, before that a fishy foot place and before that a weird clothes shop)
Where on earth would TK Maxx go? The store on Main Street is quite big (not that I've ever been in) and no unit in Bloomfields could rival that unless they take the other unit near Laser - not Harry Corry, the other furniture place that closed. And then there's the possibilty of Peacocks closing.

It's big but the shape is very awkward, with the central location of the stairwells. Now they've moved rugs to the front door its a bit like walking into a Tunisian bazaar. I could see them taking Laser or Reids at Bloomfields though.0 -
I blame the councils for the cities and town’s being empty of shops. 20 years ago I would have done some shopping in Carrickfergus centre, now I wouldn’t do near it unless I had to use the bank or hair dressers.
We run a successful online business and I would love to open a shop as well, however we have priced this out a few times over the last 5 years and to be honest the rates businesses have to pay are silly money (usually more than the rent being charged) and make it a non starter.
Lots of shop units sitting empty due to this reason and not going to change anytime soon. It costs me a fraction of the cost to do business on the internet than it would be to do business from a shop.
So my thoughts would be to give new business 2 – 3 years rates free then a teared system of rates to get people into the units and also stop selling of the car parks so that free parking can be provided.
Businesses need to be encouraged to return and provide jobs and income to the towns so councils have to stop bleeding them dry!!!
The reality is that town centres as we know them are dying, due to the likes of Tescos, shopping centres and because of the internet - People simply buy online.
Retail shops in towns just cant compete with that.
Also, locals just dont support local small businesses. They WILL drive to the nearest Tescos to save a pound.0 -
Just to update the list of closed/closing shops in Bangor.
Peacocks in Flagship Centre and Bloomfileds have both now closed.
Semi Chem in Flagship Centre closes on Friday 30th March at 5pm.
Game Stop on High Street has closed recently.
We need to support the remaining shops on the high street before it disappears forever - support your local shops in Bangor now!0 -
It is getting very bad in Bangor there will be no High street shops left at this rate.
So many reports that dunnes is also pulling out of flag ship and Iceland but is this just rumours ?0
