How to stop feeling sorry for mysyself

I have a friend who's just buried her 3 year old son. If you could speak to her you'd soon start counting your blessings and stop feeling sorry for yourself.

I'm sorry for your friend's tragic loss, and truly sorry if I appear ungrateful for what I do have.
Unfortunatly sometimes, we just can't help the way we feel though, and as stated in my OP I appreciate that people who have real reason to feel down will most likely think me a selfish person, to be honest I did actually expect more posts like this!

So, I made a real effort today since I woke up to the sun shining, always makes me feel a little better, went to work, then came home and tackled the housework, it's made a huge difference, and although it's by no means spotless, it certainly looks a lot better and it's nice to be able to see all the floor again - though I must get the hoover out tomorrow :o
Just hope this mood lasts for at least a few days, the trouble is, I'm very reluctant to see my GP as I don't really want to start taking anti depressants unless absoloutly neccessary and since I work in pharmacy, I see so many people put onto these and then stay on them, and I'd rather try other ways to not feel down if possible.
Thanks again everyone for the replies, it really does help to 'talk' about things. I don't really have family I can talk to as my mother is unfortunatly very self absorbed most of the time and somehow manages to turn pretty much everything I say around to kind of try turn the attention to her (hard to explain) and I'm not close to my dad.

You have to just tell yourself to stop feeling sorry for yourself, and do it.
Don't sit wallowing, put happy music on and get the place cleaned up.

    Spend time with cheerful people.

Eat lots of colourful food, red, orange, bright green, fruit and veg. Make a big happy plateful.

Treat yourself to cherries and strawberries, walk on grass, have a shower.

Make yourself physically tired so you sleep all night,

Avoid junk food, it clogs the system and drags you down.

Watch Adey's videos, they will cheer you up a lot :)

And you know that telling the OP this is helpful? Or just downright insensitive!

Jewelry? Seriously? Sheldon you are the most shallow, self-centered person I have ever met. Do you really think that another transparently-manipu... OH, IT'S A TIARA! A tiara; I have a tiara! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me! Put it on me!

The OP asked how to stop feeling sorry for herself. As I said, if she could speak to my friend she would soon stop feeling sorry for herself.

To be fair zaksmum, no matter if the OP or any of the rest of us spoke to your friend and had huge huge feelings of sympathy for them, it wont change how we feel about our own stuff.

Whilst I can only imagine the level of despair your friend has felt, it doesn't take away my own feelings of despair when I think about how depressed we are about where we now live, or the sadness my daughter feels when she gets picked on in her new school because of her 'proper' accent, or the fact my disabled son has no friends or anyone to speak to other than us.

Of course these pale into comparison when thinking about the death of a child but knowing that doesn't magically make us feel better all of a sudden about our own stuff and it's very dismissive to suggest it should.
