My 3-year-old is in a toddler bed (an extendable one from Ikea - I think it's cute), and it's fine, and should last him ages still. As previous posters have said, it does have its advantages, but it's not essential.

I guess it might depend on whether you're planning to have more little ones and whether the toddler bed would get used again?

Having said that, if you've been given a single bed, I'd probably save money and just stick with that. :)

My DD went into single bed with Tomy Bed Guard at 18 months although she did have a cotbed but we decided to go straight from cot to bed.

She has been fine and is now 2 (+ 2 months/) and I will do bthe same again when DS reaches the appropiate age.

  • i was given a toddler bed for spud just before he turned 2 (he's ten and a half now). it was metal and i could get in with him no problem. he was a tiny scrap who didn't weigh anything though, i think a heavier child might find the mattress too thin because the one we had was like a cot mattress really. then he had a single bed with his chosen bedding for his third birthday and the toddler bed was passed on to his cousin.

roo is 18 months old and has only been in his cot for 12 months (moses basket until 6 months) but the mattress is ruined already, it sags where he lies. he's a large heavy child (very tall and his weight is right for his height, he's not overweight). i was thinking today that he needs a bed but that would mean getting rid of a cupboard because his room is small. i can't really get rid of the cupboard until we stop using the nappy changing table. ho hum ... nowhere else to put the changing table and nappy bin. maybe we'll have to go for a toddler bed to save space.

by the way my first child wriggled and turned circles in bed so i had to use two tomy bed rails, not just one. they fold down so it's easy to get the child in and out of bed, you just lift them up again when you need them.

  • my son went into a single bed at 11 months with bed guards. My daughter moved into a double bed from a cotbed at 3 1/2, with no guards. I think toddler beds are a waste of money and are only useful if you are restricted for space and the bedroom is tiny.

Are you using the nappy changing table to store items underneath or to change baby on? If it's just to change baby on what about a mat, that's all I used. Can't answer about nappy bin, one of those that you put disposible nappies in or something to soak re-usables in. Bathroom no good??

    I agree

Do you really need the changing table anymore as he is 18 months old ? couldnt you just use a mat on the floor ? :D
  • I put my dd in a single bed when she was 18 months. No problem.

    Wishing you the best

  • part of the charm of a changing table is that he stays on it :rotfl: my husband has a bad back and i've got a bad hip. we're like a couple of pensioners :o the nappy bin could be in the bathroom yes, but the bathroom is too tiny for changing him so the actual changing would have to be done in his room or another room.

the cot will be oky for a month or so while i think about it, rearrange his room and look at the storage (meaning chuck away everything that doesn't belong to baby).

  • but sorry, back to the OP i would stick with the single bed if i were you, unless it's too high for toddler to climb into/fall out of. i only used a toddler bed because it was given to me and i found it a real pain buying sheets etc. and ended up paying the full price at mothercare etc.

All four of mine were in big beds at around 12mths old. Didn't use any bedguards, but did have a safety gate in the doorway.
