Big bed vs Toddler bed

Hello! I've got a little boy who will be two next month and my hubby and I are thinking it's getting to the time he should move from his cot to a 'big boy bed'. The dilemma we have is that my husband's Nan has bought us a single bed, solely for the purpose of giving to our son but we don't know if it will be too big a step for him. We didn't ask her to buy the bed, she just went out and did it, bless her. We are debating whether to buy a toddler bed instead because it is smaller but obviously, that could be a waste of money considering there is a brand new, single bed ready for him to use.
What have any of the parents here done when it came to moving their babies from cot to bed? Did you use a toddler bed or just go straight to a single bed (with guards)?
I would appreciate any input!
Many thanks

My 3 went straight into normal beds, why would you need a special toddler bed are they a new fangled thingy.
P.S my eldest is 16 this year.0 -
I wouldnt buy a toddler bed if you already have a single bed
As he is 2 he will be fine
Toddler beds are good if you start using them when the child is 12 - 18 months (like some people do) as they are lower to the floor and as they may not be too steady on feet its easier for them to climb in / out ( which may not be a good thing
)
My eldest went into a normal single bed with a Tomy bed guard rail.
My youngest had a toddler bed with built in rails as his room is sooooooooooo tiny !0 -
Straight to a normal bed, especially as you already have it, buying a toddler bed would ne throwing good money after bad IMO:DLife's a beach! Take your shoes off and feel the sand between your toes.0

My sons both went into normal beds with guards. DS2 at 11 months because he could climb out of the cot!! No point spending money on a junior bed when you have a perfectly good single.

yep....my 3 also went straight into a big bed with a bed guard.
also used to put a spare quilt next to the bed for a while with my middle one cos he thrashed about so much he would still end up on floor no matter where we positioned bed guard!0 -
My eldest was about 18 months and went straight from cot to single bed with no problems at all.
My youngest was just 9 months old when he discovered how to climb up and out of the cot, so I put him in a single bed for safety reasons!
Neither had bed guards, and they were both fine.
I would just put your child in a single bed to save the expense of buying a toddler bed. Here I go again on my own....0 -
My 3 all went straight into a proper bed with a rolled up towel under the mattress which made a slight curve to the wall, to prevent any rolling out.
No problems at all.:j0 -
My 2 year old went straight into a single bed but it's a nightmare getting her to stay in it and wish we'd kept her in the cot longer!0
