  • Hi,

My elder 2 went straight into a "big bed" at 18 months. The eldest had to because we needed the cot! and the little brother then broke the cot at 18 months!!

We used a bed rail the + points to a single bed are sheets/matress protectors and duvet covers are all the same size and you stand a chance of finding so good quality bedding a a reasonable price... and it will last, well at least as long as their favourite charachter!

Our youngest went into a very pink toddler bed on her 2nd birthday at first I tried to get the single duevt and covers to use on it but they we huge!!! (even when tucked down the side of the bed and used sideways if you understand me!) so after about 10 days I ended going out and getting junior matress protectors, junior size duvet and junior duvet sets. As you can imagine I cost way more than buying regular single bed sized linen.

I don't think there is a right or wrong answer to your question... If I were in you shoes I would get a bed rail and let them choose some bedding (to help with the "big bed" transition)

    Hope this helps

I've experience of both. My DS went from cot to single bed. With DD she had a cot-bed so it was converted to toddler bed for her. I used guards with both.

The main advantage with the smaller bed was it didn't take up as much space, important to us as she has the smallest room. The main disadvantage was it wasn't strong or big enough for an adult to sit/lie on, so couldn't sit on it to read a story or lie with her for a short while if she was upset, feeling ill.

Since you have been given the single bed I would go with that.

if he is not attempting to climb out then i would leave the sides on ( as long as possible !) ;) TBH :)

you will probably want to think about removing it as /when you toilet train him so he can use the potty / toilet at night and before bed etc easily :)

It was still as new when i sold it on ebay ,some 3 yrs later !

My son now has one of the mid sleeper beds with storage space underneath ,and we literally had to hammer it in :o and remove the skirting borads to enable us to fit it in !

Either better quality than mine, or highly likely you are a lot smaller than me;)

Was yours a toddler bed or a cot bed? Mine was a cot bed and I never felt the wooden rungs were strong enough for anything other than a child. I suppose a toddler bed which is the same as a normal bed just smaller would be sturdier.

ah yes it was a toddler bed ,like this one http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Product/partNumber/3755747/Trail/C%24cip%3D49651.Toys%2Band%2Bbaby%3EC%24cip%3D49652.Baby%2Band%2Bnursery%2Bequipment%3EC%24cip%3D49653.Cots%2Band%2Bnursery%2Bfurniture.htm

My nephew had a cot bed and the slats broke a few times when my sister was just leaning on it to change it ! lol

    Hi

Our eldest went into a normal single bed with the legs taken off so that he could get in and out as he wanted to (with a safety gate across the door) and then we put the legs on when he grew a bit

Saves you buying a toddler bed and then a normal one

both my 2 boys (now 5 and 3)went straight from cot at 2.5yrs into normal single beds. We just used the tomy bed guard (bout £20?)on them. We made a big fuss of them being a big boy now, and they chose a duvet cover they wanted ie:fimbles, bob the builder, and they both settled in fine.

I really can't see the benefit of the toddler bed. A bed guard on a normal bed suffices and lasts them until whenever you want!

  • Well it appears to be unanimous that I put my son in the single bed then! Excellent! I was hoping you guys would say that as I really didn't fancy all the expense of a toddler bed whcih would need to be 'upgraded' to a single bed at some point anyway.

Many thanks for your help - it's great to hear that so many kids have gone straight to a big bed without emotional scarring ;):D
