Increase in car insurance after accident not my fault

  • I got my NCD back 15 minutes literally before my current policy ended.
    It's saved me £750!
But I removed all of my other claims, 2 fault and added on an extra years bonus to get an idea of ho much cheaper it would be next year when I don't have to declare them and it as the same price as this years one.

Also how comes the same trading company can have more than one sister company but they charge very variying amounts?
    Crooks mate, proper.

Thought I would add my 2p
Renewal came through from Elephant - £809! up from £436 last year.
(I live in London). Quick price check showed I could renew for half this with number of insurers including Admiral (£397). Knowing Admiral and Elephant are same company and that they did exactly the same the previous 3 years and on each occasion they had matched their quote - I rang Elephant.
They said they could renew at £437. When I asked why the extra £40 they said it was due to a no fault claim and that - and I quote -
"If you have made a no-fault claim against a 3rd party you are statistically more likely to make a fault claim"!

So - first they try it on with a £809 renewal then they add insult to injury by bumping the match by £40 for a claim that was not my fault.

To infer that I am more likely to make a fault claim because I had made a non fault claim is IMHO nonsense.
Anyone who knows anything about statistics knows that these events are mutually exclusive. The likelyhood of making a claim is based on the events surrounding that claim - not the events surrounding a previous claim.

If an accident is not my fault I am more likely to claim since I don't expect this to affect my renewal.
If an accident is my fault then I will carefully consider whether I make a claim since it definitely will.
Either way one claim does not affect the other.

I would suggest that their statistical modelling is flawed - If anyone knows different I would be keen to hear.

Anyway - after a lengthy discussion with a team manger at Elephant who was not interested in retaining my business I renewed with another insurer at £322 and got a meerkat into the bargain as well!

  • I agree, this is exactly what I did when I my vehicle was parked and hit by a truck. I was not in an accident, nor did I make a claim.

My car was hit from behind while parked. It seems to add about £8 to the premium.

Somebody hit my car last year, for which they accepted total fault, and their insurance company paid up for repairs to my car.

I've just gone to renew my car insurance and the premium went up by £80, when I answered their question about 'any claims, regardless of fault in the past 3 years'. I did not make any claim on my insurance, the other party claimed.

How is this increase fair? It is all agreed it was not my fault. Has anybody found any way to get around this? I am outraged!

    Thanks, Sarah

Be grateful it only went up 80 quid! With the new EU ruling that means they're not allowed to discriminate against men because of gender your premium should have gone up more!

(and yes that is fair.. us men have to pay for everything when dating you women, the drinks, the cab / car, the date expenses etc and you women just sit around filing your nails saving your dosh laughing about it!)
