Increase in car insurance after accident not my fault

Options
Somebody hit my car last year, for which they accepted total fault, and their insurance company paid up for repairs to my car.

I've just gone to renew my car insurance and the premium went up by £80, when I answered their question about 'any claims, regardless of fault in the past 3 years'. I did not make any claim on my insurance, the other party claimed.

How is this increase fair? It is all agreed it was not my fault. Has anybody found any way to get around this? I am outraged!

Thanks, Sarah

    Lots of threads about this.

Basically someone with a non-fault claim is statistically more likely to make a fault claim. So you are a higher claims risk now, hence your premium increases.

    Being outraged wont change that.

My wife was in the same situation, no fault claim in Februray last year. Renewal quote for this no fault claim was 50% more than she paid in January 2011. Some of this will be due to the supposed general increase in premiums etc, but 50% was taking the mick.

Don't get outraged, simply shop around. No one is forcing you to stay with the same company and they don't reward loyalty - they punish those who simply accept and pay up.

After 10 minutes on the net we eventually found insurance for £195, one of the lowest premiums she has ever had.

And then take great pleasure in telling current insurer where to go when they find they can suddenly match the new price.

    5t.
What if there was no such thing as a rhetorical question?

Something to think about next time your brake testing someone and thinking "hehehe, it'll be all his fault".

Insurance generally goes up by around £100 per non-fault claim on a rolling 5 year basis.

Should be able to claim £80 x 5 off the third party insurers as an "uninsured loss" but not sure if you are able to now but certainly something to like about when you send in your excess, made up injury and loss and expense claims when you settle.

Another £400 added to every non fault claim should see all our premiums go up nicely too. :)

So I suppose although you did not make a claim you did report it as an incident to your insurer.

What exactly happened to cause the damage to your car?

    Here's a question for everyone..
Although OP did not make a claim when she shops around for quotes most insurers ask "have you had and accidents or claims in the last x years?"....Is this the way it is worded?

If OP was in an accident she will have to answer 'yes'

If OP car was stationary (parked when hit by other car I wonder if she could legitimately answer "no' to the question?
  • I had a non-fault claim in June when I collected a learner driver, although the thought of him going to court over it eased the pain.

    He was a complete **** anyway. :p

    I'm dreading renewal now.
  • Has the insurance gone up because of teh claim or just because insurance has increased in price for most people lately?

This is absolutely correct - and do you know whats even worse? - it can actually be more expensive to have a non-fault accident than an at-fault one!

As proven by a recent insurance quote from Admiral, a policy with declared accident worked out about £20 more expensive with it declared as non-fault vs at-fault.

If everyone did this, instead of grabbing the extra fiver or tenner they'll offer, maybe we wouldn't be surrounded by companies (not just insurance) that reward repeat business by stealing from the customer.
