Am I right in thinking (previous thread?) that you're a Guardian for Camelot?
If so are you living in a conventional house with a domestic supply or is this a more unconventional commercial building?

Many of the properties can be rather old and in poor state of repair and, I understand, pretty poorly maintained. Either way, it probably warrants the attention of your local Council's Environmental Health team who will be able to guide you through where the responsibility lies for repairing the problem and ascertain whether there is anything else in the premises that may cause you harm at another time (there's the possibility of asbestos, gas safety, lead etc.)

You should find their number on the local council website, sometimes under "Consumer Protection". If you live in a guardian occupied property, as I understand it, the standards must be safe and healthy as in other more traditional 'tenanted' properties. I'm not entirely certain that is always the case. An Environmental Health Officer will liaise with the owners or the managing company to ensure that all is made safe and save you the problem of chasing in circles - you'll have a professional on your side.

certainly sounds more like an old commercial property with a 3 phase supply.
virtually unheard of in a domestic house.

Thanks DV... what are some ways that it could become broken? Is it likely to be a physical action, or could it be related to works currently being done in the street opposite (large scale building work)?

Is it at all possible that an occupant could have mistakenly caused the fault by plugging in a dodgy appliance?

Works in the street combined with a gas leak scare , sound familiar sounds like they hit / damaged / broke the cable ?

    proving it is another thing

Ring your supplier , not the one you pay the bill to , but the one who supply the mains look at the map below in this link and put the mouse over the area you live in to find the info

Yep that's right. 1960's large building, out of normal use for the last 18 months or more.

They have really been laying on the fire safety - we've got 24 hour monitors now and a new set of smoke alarms (additional to the previous smoke alarms and the central fire alarm that they're currently repairing at a cost of £4,000). We've all been given a lecture by a safety officer and made to sign our understanding of it tonight too.

So I'm sure they're carefully taking measures for our safety... but where do we go for financial compensation? Talking to some of my squatmates tonight, they've lost cookers, computer supplies, everything!
