Flooded

Hi i hope this is the right section but our house got flooded yesterday due to a burst water pipe in the airing cupboard :( all the downstairs flooring is ruined and the carpet on the landing to.there's clothing and footwear that got ruined along with some electrical items.the pipe is now fixed and the electrician has checked the light fitting which the water was coming through and removed it,we haven't had a call from an assessor despite being told we should have got the call last night.what is the normal process? our wood flooring down stairs cost us nearly £600 will we get the value back or an estimate? we had just finished decorating downstairs aswell so were totally gutted, ive spent the last 24hrs really upset about it all:(

The way it would normally be dealt with is that the insurance company for your buildings will send out a company for your floor (maybe Independent Inspections or Cavalier Insurance Services Ltd) and they would assess the damage.
They would then either repair or replace it. Their goal is indemnity which means they are going to put you in the position you were in before the incident happened.

This is what they would normally do, all insurers are different. They may even ask you for an estimate but most insurers prefer to keep it "in house" to reduce costs.
If you have any other questions let me know.

Thank you,as u can understand were really gutted about it all,we had just got all our downstairs finished, the flooring has been down for a few years but its not cheap rubbish,we got the skirtings to match it.unfortunately we still havent heard from an assessor,OH is going to be calling them again tomorrow and having words, its just not good enough.we have 2 young children and our house smells awful.problem is the skirtings will have to come off for the floor to come up which im hoping wont affect the wall paper as its only been up since december.there there is the upstairs carpet which has had to come up,have been told if it can be saved they will have it re-fitted,its filthy and smelly.our vinyl in the kitchen has onlt been down 12 months that to is wet underneath.i dont think there is anyway of them repairing the wood floor,we have it going from the living room through to the hall there is no seperation at all.and our living room is a very large room and we have quite a long hall way.i just want this all sorted and to know whats going on,just not happy with the way this company is dealing with it all

If the problem which caused the flood is now sorted, the insurance company won't be in a rush to do much else. If you were without light or heat or water they would probably be a bit quicker to get back to you but they won't see your problems as urgent, they'll be cosmetic. I've been flooded, more than once, i got an emergency plumber and roofer within a couple of hours but the assessor came a few days later. I wasn't really bothered as at least the emergency was over and i could manage even without carpets and flooring. They'll be out to you as soon as they can i'm sure, "having words" with them might be the wrong approach ! When i had a burst last year it was minus 12 outside and i had no water or heating for 4 days, i have children too, it wasn't good but i think the insurance company did get to me as quickly as possible.

Your house got flooded YESTERDAY and you expect to have it all settled TODAY?? Which planet are you on?! :rotfl:

Unfortunately every insurance claim carries an element of inconvenience.
If due to the damp your children are having any medial problems (common in asthmatics) then mention this to your insurance company, this sounds like a significant escape of water and they may appoint a company such as Munters, Chem Dry, Belfor or Rainbow to install dehumidifiers to dry the place out.

There are ways of cleaning and restoring carpets and wooden floor, unless they can bring it to the previous condition they will generally replace it.

Are the insurers aware you're running a business from home?

No we expected a call from an assessor like we was told we would be on the day it happened to let us know when someone would be out to assess the damage
