We had a letter today from HMRC saying we owed some money, I rang them and its a debt from 2008 which they say we hadn't settled for PAYE which has being accruing interest at a rate of 12p a day for the last 3 years.
They said they won't deal with SC an want us to make an offer. I said £40 a month but they want £145 instead - no way can we afford this...... We have saved £40 a month by changing our power supplier so this was a cushion. I am unsure where to go on this, I know some other posters also had businesses so any help would be appreciated.

Am really sorry to hear about this Bertman.

I think HMRC debt is considered as priority debt so the payment to the taxman would be allowed by StepChange. This would be outside your DMP and this would need to be added to your budget and hence your payments to other debts would need to go down.

It may be worth asking on the main DFW forum to get some broader experience/advice but I think you need to speak to StepChange tomorrow and see what they say. Please let us know how you get on.

  • Ohhh that's a nuisance for you. As I understand it tax is considered a priority debt so DMPs have to take it into consideration. I think it's as simple as the DMP gets reduced by £145. I know that will mean longer takent o pay the debt back but also more likely for creditors to stop interest too.

I hope it works out for you

  • Hi all,
Hows the snow with you all? :)
Just popping on with an update, had 4 letters today from stepchange, had no post for a while due to weather, one of them basically saying one of my creditors has refused the offer of payment. Annoying but I know what will happen now it will go to a dca which is probably for the best.

I am also trying to save money on food this month too, and finding lots of inspiration on the old style board!

Hope everyone is well, and not too cold!

We have had quite a bit in Yorkshire, car has been stranded since Friday. Am tackling reserves in the freezer. Will need to venture out for bread and milk though :)

Good that you are keeping upbeat, pretty normal stuff as you know but can be offputting. Keep in there.

We had almost nothing in today after eating from the cupboards and freezer - last night for tea I had a tin of bins!

    Luckily all stocked up now!

  • Hi All,

Well today's brought a frustrating letter from Lloyds where I have an overdraft of £3200. I have taken months trying to get them to reduce the interest on the account, that finally happened in December. Today they say they are going to cancel my overdraft because I dont use it - of course, I have a new bank account elsewhere - and they plan charge me £10 a day for an unauthorised overdraft. No sooner do I make any headway into the debt and they add to it one way or another.
It seems to me that a current acount & overdraft is treated differently to credit cards and loans. I've been defaulted on everything else but not this.
Any clues what I should do next guys??

    Thanks
    Debt Apr 2011 - a staggering £65171, ...so a 20 year plan ahead just like a 2nd mortgage!!!:o
Its going down, now £40k :happyhear

Sorry they are not on board yet

As youve already tried with them go to the FOS. A call works best, very easy, details in my twin, TTFTM posts

Let us know how you get on

Did someone mention my name? :)

Have you complained to the FOS about Lloyds TSB?

If you haven't already, it's got to be worth a go. It will cost you nothing and you could have a lot to gain.
