    Couple of things...

Early on in my DMP, I 'overestimated' my costs. I really regret that now as my DMP would be finishing 3months earlier. But I look back and think "Could I have coped without that extra £££?" and I'm honestly not sure of the answer!

Also, would it be worth keeping that HP money and sending it directly to Halifax each month... get the debt paid off quicker - I know this is against the CCCS rules though, but just thinking out loud!

Yes I have to say the idea of using the HP money to pay off Halifax is one that has occurred to me. I may speak to CCCS about it but I know it is not the way they like to do things.

I know we wouldn't have coped without 'overestimating' our costs. I have been doing some calculations and if I put all those costs towards our debts we would be clear 6 months earlier. However knowing my OH and how we got into this mess in the first place I know that scrimping every penny wouldn't have worked in our case. Life would have been just tooooo miserable, and we would probably have been divorced by now:eek:

I think when you set up your DMP you have to think about what is more important to you and your family and where your priorities lie. It may take me longer to be debt free but in the great scheme of things 6 months doesn't seem too much of a price to pay to be able to live a reasonable life now.

Yes, that's true. And I wouldn't discuss the HP money with CCCS as they will then know you have it going spare and will ask you to do another budget and then put that towards your DMP. Though you could ask the question on the 'Ask a CCCS Debt Counsellor a Question' thread on here?

    That's an idea too;)

Although when we set up the DMP originally we had to put in how many more payments were left on the HP agreement so they know it is going to finish soon anyway. It will be nice to have at least one debt paid off:j

  • Hi Everyone, sorry if this seems stupid, but I haven't made any "token payments" to my creditors. I just cancelled the Direct Debits to avoid more missed payment charges and besides, I have no money available to pay them (because my overdraft was swiftly withdrawn). Should I be worried? Why do token payments need to be made?

    Hi and welcome

Token payments are a gesture of goodwill to show you are trying to pay the next back. You only need to pay them if you have a gap between what you used to pay them and before the DMP kicks in. (IE don't let a full calender month pass without them receiving something)

    Does that help?

  • Hi all,

Myself and my wife are in the process of speaking to National Debtline about setting up a DMP. Total debt is around £16k (1 CC; 1 loan) with monthly payments totalling £500 which we are struggling to meet. So far we have missed only one payment on each - both last month. My question is, as we are being plagued by calls from these creditors, what should we tell them? Can we say that we are applying for a DMP? Should we make token payments? We'd like these calls to stop until the DMP is handling everything for us but this is obviously going to take a little while to set up.

    Thanks in advance!
