Thought I would post it in all it's glory. Has anyone else had one like this. Not the scores obviously the layout.

This has got to be some sort of clerical error on their part surely, reading your posts suggests you know which way is up! Needs an appeal if it stands. ;)

How can we appeal if needs be?
  • Along with knowledge, patience and empathy are important attributes to do this job well. If you get wound up easily I think you could find this job difficult once in the day to day life of working in the JC.

The best of luck to all those invited to interview!

Aidan, with all the respect in the world you posted your first competency and I could highlight one line where you actually said what you did. You're meant to sell yourself not just say things that sound good about teamwork. On what basis would you appeal?!
  • Thats what comes with restrictions on words, sticking me in an interview would be the best way to gain the information they are looking for and not putting word limits on personal experience. there are going to be some instances where very intelligent applicants have had to squeeze a mammoth situation or responsibility into these few words and be marked down for not being more specific, whilst at the same time a less suited candidate who gives an example of how they completed the washing up after dinner will get a good score for turning a simple task into a 200 word essay.

I just said it could be seen as insulting. Like if you'd done well on the online test and people started saying "Well that test was completely flawed! Just because you knew how to answer the questions doesn't mean you'll be good at the job. The best people for the job are going to miss out" etc.

That's probably true either way, since I could've got a great test score and great competencies and been crap at the job. I do know of someone with a low score and poor competencies who did the job before and was much loved there also. I do think the process is missing out on some good people. This is inevitable with any process, but seems marked here.

I've suggested that information crucial to one's success is either provided with the application or clearly linked to it. I haven't gone to "The Head of the World" to tell them to rescore everyone's competencies so you get knocked out of the running (as if they would, ha!), I just think the initial stages could be made clearer and fairer for everyone, particularly for those of us who haven't worked in the public sector before. Trying to find what I don't know I need isn't one of my talents: I did look and didn't find that info. I should also note that I have a disability which means I am less likely than you to find that information if I don't know I need it. I read all of the documentation provided with the application, some external websites, and portions of the CS website itself, and did not find what really ought to have been clearly linked from the app.

I hope they will consider some small changes (although probably not because of anything I've said), even though if they do that next time round, I'll have a harder time getting anywhere if the information is provided more clearly.

Can you not hear how obnoxious and insulting this is?

Its not obnoxious or insulting. Its factually correct and phrased appropriately.

No really: it is obnoxious and insulting. If it hadn't been, it would have read something like this:

"I'm sorry, but you probably don't have any grounds for appeal because your competencies didn't focus enough on what you did; they were more about your beliefs. This is why I think you've been scored 1s."

Obnoxious and insulting are strong words to use, and nothing in the post concerned warranted the use of those words.
