Before removing more items from derelict building and recycling areas you should check the law on theft by finding.0

What about when you take away the cost of a waste carriers licence (I assume you have this) , public liability insurance (and this) , use of a phone, van maintenance, fuel etc etc.0

finders keepers loser weepers.
The building is derelict and will be levelled and the rubble ground to hardcore. The cans end up in the council dump and they take enough money anyway.
Of course some might not like it but it's a jungle out there if you have a working partner - too much money for any benefits. I claim nothing and resuse everything.0 -

To be honest if I could get 40hrs on minimum wage I might take it , but I can't , they don't want over forties, they want young kids then whine they aren't reliable.
Good week this week, local farmer has a rough piece of land on a slope he lets the motorbike scramblers club use. The thing is they have a meet booked for next weekend and he never made a proper note and has spent the last few months dumping stuff and letting it go wild as he thought he had loads of time to sort it.
I was only down there with the dog and asked about some baling twine and if he had anything and asked me to grip this area for him and I could cut up the fallen dead tree and take the slurry tank baskets for tat.
A weeks work with bacon butties thown in plus other things like some aluminium bits and bobs etc.
Now the frost has gone I can get some garden tidying started.0 -

Feel better now? you know F all about me sunny jim , I've never nicked anything from anyone OK. Bloody Xmas trees in a pile in the park then turned into chipping to be given away free? how is that stealing? How is reusing building materials from burnt out derelict eyesores stealing?
You'd be better off waking up to the real world mate.0 -
I'm over 50 and been out of work for 8 years. Despite working for years, I'm not eligible for any benefits because, like Should be out Gardening, my partner works. Interestingly, this also means that we are not counted in the Unemployment statistics either. I wouldn't mind getting even a fraction of the 26k the government wants to cap benefits at...
Good for you, Should be out Gardening, it's heartening to read about some positive stuff :T . Started me thinking about things I could turn my hand to.
Some really self-righteous types on this board though :eek:0 -
I like reading Should be's posts too , when I first read them I went out walking and you know I looked at things in a different way. I looked at skips and wondered what was in them, I saw on the wasteland I go for dog walking old pallets and stuff. I saw locally hedges that needed trimming etc. makes you think about what we waste and what needs doing just round the local area.0

The thing is I've done several thing like tidy up yards for businesses by goping in and asking the owner or manager if they'd like me to clean up for a tenner, now a tenner isn't much but £20 is. Often they'll have their own bods but sometimes they haven't and after a stormy day or in spring when the weeds start they are greatful.
Then I can ask if I could have that pallet, or if I see something that might need doing I might ask if it needs doing , I got some big 5 gallon tub things that had adhesive in one time and cleaned they were great, I got an tarpaulin which was OK.
You've got to be brazen and a bit cheeky , but always look smart and not rough as people are worried about people knocking on doors. I never cold call in the streets, only businesses.
If I see the council bods trimming the trees or cutting down an old tree I ask if I can have a pile of logs etc. They don't care and I get free logs that I can sell. I keep and eye out when building work is going on and ask If I can have the sand left over or the cement etc, often they are glad to be rid of it rather than them storing it.
It's very quiet at the moment, and mild too so I haven't sold as much wood. But i have some tree trimming later and when I pop into town I will look into any of the skips I see and look out for new ones, but I have to be quick as there are plenty of skip divers round here!
I think thats superb , well done to you. Since I've read your posts I look out now and you can see a lot of waste when folk have their houses done up, those bags of sand left outside for months after etc.
The thing is the government won't help so you must get out there and do the best you can.0
