I have a land line which I intend to have disconnected - got a second line in the house for Broadband. I want to cut costs - at present land line costs approx £100 quarter. I have a mobile - payg - just a basic Samsung. I don't want/need anything fancy - just want to be able to text/call family/friends. I have never had a contract on a phone. I have heard that a Sim contract may be the way to go - I am not mobile phone savvy. On my payg - I have just been paying £10 Mr T and getting free £20 - but I think the call charges are high that way - are they?
Any ideas please?

How can a landline be costing £100 per quarter? BT line rental is £14.60pm, so that's £43.80p qtr. Anytime calls about a fiver pm. That's £15 p qtr: total, no more than £58.80 a quarter.
You must be making a large no. of exclusive calls on top.No free lunch, and no free laptop

As macman says, if a landline is costing you £400 a year, something is going wrong, or you are a little addicted to voting on the X-factor? (!).
I'm also a little concerned about the "second line in the house" for broadband. Do you currently have two landline connections? Please clarify how you intend to get broadband once you've ditched your landline.
I'm a little confused.
If you could make it a little clearer exactly what you have now, who it is with, and how much you pay (possibly break down the £100/quarter into types of calls), and some of the gurus on here will no doubt come up with some cheaper options.
Moving over to a mobile could save a fortune, or cost you one. It depends what calls you are looking to make.0 -
For sim-only mobile contracts check Chitter-Chatter (t-mobile).
For £6 p.m. you can get 100m+100t to mobiles + unlimited calls to landline numbers (free booster).0 -

I don't deal with the bills in this house. I did all the money side in 1st marriage - this time Mr F does it all. Spoke to him as I was guessing a bit - says - £60 - £70 a quarter. I try not to phone mobiles but DD3 doesn't have a land line. I have 4 children living spread around the UK so phone them a couple of times a month. I also have 2 children living locally who I ring. Other main calls are to a friend who lives about fifty miles away - ring her about twice a month. How can a landline be costing £100 per quarter? BT line rental is £14.60pm, so that's £43.80p qtr. What mobile network is DD3 on? If Orange, get yourself a Orange SIM Card (PAYG) and add her as your magic number. Then, calls between each of you will be free! You can add a new Magic Number every 6 months.0 -
There's no problem phoning mobiles as long as you do it out of your inclusive allowance on your own tariff (if you switch to contact). No landline tariff gives inclusive calls to mobiles.
If you are spending more than £5 a month on landline calls then it's cheaper to be on an Anytime tariff.
But without knowing what you are on and what you are currently paying, it's not really possible to advise. No free lunch, and no free laptop

I have quoted the sort calls I make in m previous post. I don't watch X Factor so do not do phone voting. I am retired - don't watch programmes like that. To clarify - second marriage - when I moved in Mr F had a land line for working from home. We had a second land line put in as I had elderly relatives and needed my line to not be constantly tied up. Broadband connection was put on the original line when we got a computer. We are with BT. I just want a mobile to keep in touch with my children as stated in the previous post outlining my use of the phone. As macman says, if a landline is costing you £400 a year, something is going wrong, or you are a little addicted to voting on the X-factor?
