    I second the Delia one.
  • Brilliant thanks, yeh the Delia one is more the kind of thing i was looking for...i had a ready prepared spicy cabbage recently and amongst other things were onion, apple and cinnamon,so the delia one sounds like it will be similar(or hopefully better,if i do it properly)

  • I would also highly recommend the Delia one - it is so popular I get asked to make it to take with me if I'm having Xmas lunch at someone else's house! Its also really good to make the day before, let it cool and then reheat Xmas day - flavours increase and no faffing around on the day.

I also think that Delia's recipe is the best.
It is so forgiving in that it will wait until you are ready for it and I have also frozen it too with success.

I use the Delia smith one as well, but I cooked on low power in the microwave the last time I did it, instead of hours in the oven.

I love MSE Old Style!! Was looking for a red cabbage recipe to do in my slow cooker today and went from the Old Style slow cooking index, to all recipes, to the "in my slow cooker" thread, then I googled red cabbage recipe and was directed to this thread on MSE !!! Brilliant..

There seems to be a lot of different variations, I just looked in the cupboard to see what I had. So I have a whole red cabbage, shredded, about 5 medium apples, slightly wrinkled from the fruitbowl, 1 tblsp red wine vinegar, some cider vinegar, some soft brown sugar (found hardened in the cupboard) now I need to see if I want to add some spices like clove or all spice, what do you think? Is it better with spices in?

Just made first batch pickled red cabbage using saraons recipe book. Salted overnight, packed in sterilised jars. Didn't have any pickling vinegar so used white vinegar and spices from cupboard. Hoping it tastes as good as it smells.

Hi I am attempting to make pickled cabbage for Christmas, so the cabbage is now shredded and I have sprinkled salt over it and am going to leave it for 24 hours. I believe I will have to wash the salt off before putting into the jars, now regarding vinegar I have normal malt vinegar can I use that ? I also have pickling spices, I have never done this before so advice would be really welcome. I had advice on how to make pickles a few months ago I tried them this week and they were gorgeous so thanks for that advice.Viv

This is the recipe I use, it works really well with added caraway seed and a heaped tablespoon of brown sugar if you like a sweeter pickle http://traineedomesticgoddess.blogspot.com/2009/01/pickled-red-cabbage.html

I usually use white vinegar for red cabbage but this time tried red wine vinegar as I got 3 million litres from approved foods (only a slight exaggeration!) don't know how well that's going to take though but cand only try these things. I would think that fom a pickling preserving point the malt vinegar will work perfectly well but may give a slightly harsher tasting pickle, might be better to add a little sugar as floyd suggests.
