Garage Roof Replacement - Asbestos Cement

  • I am in the far north of Scotland, a relatively windy but not exceptionally windy or exceptionally wet location close to the Dornoch Firth.

I have a large 10ft x 20ft garage constructed in the 1960s. I would like to replace the asbestos cladding of both walls and roof, and am inclined to retain most of the timber structure, treating it for woodworm/rot, replacing the worst rotted pieces.

I had been considering using ordinary sawn sarking timber for the walls, and OSB and exterior roofing felt for the roof, but am open to other suggestions. I want a roof that will not drip water in the winter, and something that I can reasonably construct myself single-handed.

I have made an 8ft x 8ft playhouse with an internal loft before with the materials mentioned above.
  • I'm looking to replace my garage roof but want to use insulated steel one side and clear glazing on the other, any tips / contacts? thanks
  • In around October 1990 Compton Buildings moved from a very reliable roofing system to a less hard wearing substitute. In part, the problem was actually the absence of asbestos. Between 1990 and their demise in 2011, Compton Garages provided only two profiles which are identifiable by the measurement ridge-to-ridge or by the shape of the ridge tile. These two corrugated fibre-cement roofing profile sheets can still be purchased from specialist suppliers.

Hi Sammo. If you don't hear from Matt let me know. I have his contact details and can thoroughly recommend him as he did a great job for me
Just seen this thread. We too have the same problem with our Crompton garage roof. Could you supply us with Matt's contact details pls.

How did you get on with disposing roof panels?

    Thanks for your time.

    Hi Matt,

Have cracked Crompton roof panels and found you on this forum.

As we live near Heathrow Airport, Ruislip Manor - I wonder if it would come under your area and if we could use your service to replace the roof.

Could you please email your contact details if interested.

    Many thanks

  • Hi,
I have come to the same decision about replacing corry cement fibre roof sheets. They last around 10 to 12 years. I am looking to replace my 5.4m x 3.2m nearly flat garage roof with box section steel (Non condensate) but I am having great difficulty finding a supplier in my area. They either don't want to know or want to charge around £150 + as a small order charge. If any one in the SE Sheffield area can help I would be most greatfull.:(:(:(
  • Thanks for your help. I am thinking of doing this.
  • There’s a lot of chatter on-line regarding the demise of Compton Buildings, makers of the Compton Garage, warranty issues and roofing replacement.

To set the matter straight, it was the summer of 2011 when Compton Buildings ceased to trade. Compton Buildings supplied over 500,000 garage units in their time and those building constructed before 1990 are very likely to have had roofs which contained some traces of asbestos.

Whilst their rival Lidget has taken on their branding they do not hold records of the original orders.

The only way to be certain whether your garage roof contains any asbestos is to have it tested.

The original roofing profiles can still be purchased from specialists although the roof can be modified by come capable firms in order to accept a much more durable steel sheet.

A quick Google for “Compton garage roofing” should return the desired result.
  • Only one company still stocks the original Compton Garage roof fixings essential for repairs on a like-for-like basis. They keep corrugated roofing too. Contact Compton Spares.com
