Garage Roof Replacement - Asbestos Cement

  • Hi mate, have sent you a PM. New B5 roof sheets will probably last 10 - 12 years unless under trees when this will be reduced. The metal box profile sheets have their own translucent sheets in the same profile. It would not be ideal to try to get a B5 translucent sheet to incorporate into a metal roof. The time difference is because a B5 roof would fit exactly as the original whereas the metal roof requires the metal purlins (that run from front to back both sides) to be fitted the other way up. ie the flat face uppermost. There are also more fixings per sheet. Hope this explains a few points. Matt

DONT BE TEMPTED WITH THE BITUMEN SHEETS.

In last year's very heavy snow, the bitumen sheets on my garage sagged under the weight of snow so much that rainwater now pools at the bottom of the dip and then drips into the garage. Whether this might be a problem depends on the distance between the beams.

If you do decide on bitumen sheets, think about leaving a section with clear plastic sheets instead (the corrugations are usually the same size) to improve the light in the garage.

ive used those types of sheets for many yrs on various projects. never a problem. maybe i had the correct support underneath.
also the sort of snow youre talking about comes along once in a blue moon.
    300 quid v 1300 quid? its a no brainer.

    Hi Matt,
I have the same problem with the roof of my Compton garage. I puchased it in 1997 and I replaced one of the roof panels couple of years ago. Now I have couple of panels with holes and a few with cracks on the whole length of the panel. I have decided to replace the whole roof. Readinding this theread, got me thinking whether to replace like for like and in 10 years time be looking to replace again or go for the alterntive material.

Do you cover the Herts area?

  • Hi, Ive been reading the info re replacing a compton roof.My dad whose in his 70's wants to replace his garage roof (himself!).He is having difficulty sourcing bolts and clamps, although has found a company near Romford that sells the panels.Has anyone got Matts contact details?.I would like to bend his ear (and try and talk my Dad in getting a quote for the work:)). Although , I know if he suddenly gets loads of companies contacting for a quote, he will freak out!
Havent used one of these sites before, so not sure if contact details can be shown?
Perhaps someone could let me know how this site works. Thanks

I sourced the roof myself. I have Matts mobile so will pm you it.

He fitted the panels and did the bolts for me with a colleague.

    Can recommend him thoroughly.

Get the roof material checked before you do anything else. I'm about to replace my garage roof - a late 70's / early 80's corrugated cement roof - and sent a small sample off to an asbestos testing lab. It has come back as asbestos-free, which is going to save me a fortune. They have supplied me with a certificate to show this.

I'm going to replace it with 18mm ply sheeting (braced underneath) with a one-piece roofing membrane.
