Whatcar have a simple comparison calculator on this page which can be downloaded

    http://www.whatcar.com/car-news/petrol-versus-diesel-which-is-cheaper-/248139

Easiest if used for new cars as its simple to find the data from their site which gives estimated service costs for the first 3 years etc

If you are mostly doing short journeys round town, you want a petrol car or a diesel that doesn't have a dual mass flywheel.
Why would a DMF make a difference for town journeys?

Remember petrols can have DMFs to...

Another person who is fooled into thinking diesels are cheaper to run...

Unless you do about 30,000 miles a year it REALLY isn't worth buying a diesel. At all.

    12000 is more like it.

  • hit and miss on a pre owned diesel with DPF fitted, 1. you dont know how the car was used prior so the DPF maybe next to full already you do some short trips and hey presto DPF warning, or 2. used as a motorway vehicle in wich case may have had a regen not so long ago.

regen soot filter now has just flashed up on a friends car advised him to get on the motorway and give it a decent blast keeping above 50mph. he does long trips daily so the DPF may have been caught short in a cycle, but faults are not limited to those who do short trips either.

Your putting extra stress on the DMF and clutch with all the extra gear changes that comes with town driving as opposed to getting into 5th and cruising on the motorway.

Having a DMF replaced is expensive add in the DPF as well your talking very expensive!!
Everyones opinion is the most important.....no wonder nothing is ever agreed on.

    Tenuous at best.

Some people report having to change DMFs at under 60K miles. At £700 a pop, this is significant.

It amuses me that people will advise against buying certain models of car because the brake discs cost £40 instead of £20, but dismiss high parts and labour costs when it comes to diesel-powered cars. Very strange.....

Only some, my car is on it's first DMF and nothing out of the ordinary has broken.

That would come under general wear and tear - it's not just diesels with DMF failures, either...

Although the clutch is expensive to change on the 75 diesel, luckily the DMF rarely goes... unfortunately, when it does, it can be expensive... my ZT's went and the overall bill (with clutch & cylinder change) came to £1200

My ZT wasn't really used for town work, and mainly did 40 or 70 mile round trips commuting on A-roads...
