from most reports short journeys are bad and very expensive!!! If short journeys are going to be your main thing it maybe better to look at another diesel without DPF or a petrol version, or a third option take it for a long drive once week,

  • thanks salespeson said it would be ok .. havent purchased it yet but did explain it was mainly for short trips
  • If you are mostly doing short journeys round town, you want a petrol car or a diesel that doesn't have a dual mass flywheel.

LMAO shocker that a salesman would tell you that, you'd think he wants to make a sale. Obviously your call but don't be in for a shock when you have to part with a large chunk of cash in the near future to replace the DPF!! and probably the DMF.

Best of luck...I think you'll need it

You need to really iron out what your usage will be: If it's round town all the time for 6 months then a long road trip then you may run into trouble. If you do 100 mile round trips (without breaks) a couple of times a month you should be fine.

The salesperson is looking for his commission on the sale. They are not really suited to town use and will regenerate a heck of a lot and may eventually need cleaning out at the dealer.

How many miles a year do you do in your car?

  • Another person who is fooled into thinking diesels are cheaper to run...

Unless you do about 30,000 miles a year it REALLY isn't worth buying a diesel. At all.

30k is a little excessive if you do the maths properly its around half that. Having just changed mine recently to a petrol from a diesel and I am a devout diesel fan I worked out I had to do 14k a year to break even on fuel costs and average servicing.

You will obviously pay more for a diesel variant over a petrol but invariably you will also sell a diesel for more than a petrol unless of course your intention is to run the car to the scrappy at the end then you should include purchase price in your equation.

What is the petrol vs diesel calculated on? I just did a rough calc comparing the 1.6 diesel and 1.6 petrol versions of a 2006 medium-sized hatchback and, based on 8000 miles per year, found the diesel is about £400 cheaper on fuel and RFL costs. Even if diesel servicing costs are higher, I wouldn't have thought they would be anywhere near as much as £400 higher for each service.

So what am I missing? What are the "hidden costs" of running a diesel?

The costs will vary car to car. I never looked at 1.6 petrols, I compared a 1.8 petrol with a 2.0 diesel equivalent and used the MPG figures given on parkers as a rough basis for the calculations. I used current local fuel prices to form the calculation also (10p difference between petrol and derv). The actual MPG wasn't that much better for he diesel IIRC something 35 / 42. These are generic figures, i'm getting around 40-45 mpg in reality now I have bought the car and I know diesel owners of the same car are achieving high 60's +.

I'm sure if you compared a 1.4 diesel with a 1.4 petrol you would get that break even mileage down even further than 8k a year. In reality though going by your calculations you would still really want to be doing 10k a year to see a real saving with the diesel, you only need a turbo failure or fuel pump to go and your talking a lot more to repair/replace than the petrol equivalent.
