    Hi,

In the bottom picture, bottom left, are they the same plants as the picture directly above, showing close up. If so, they look like cauliflowers to me, which can be left.

In the next picture going upwards, the tall strap like plants, is that garlic by any chance? if so, leave that alone. Come June it will start to die off, then you harvest that.

The next picture the plant lying down, fallen over, that looks like a cauliflower gone to seed, that needs to come out.

Above that, the dark green leaves with purple centres, broccoli? by any chance, if so, leave that alone.
In the same picture, in the centre is there a white bud? is that more cauliflower?

No idea on the lighter green one.

Top picture, is that cabbage to the left and kale.

Everything else needs weeding out, the low growing things.

If you don't mind me saying so, your soil looks as if it needs a bit of work. Did you double dig it when you took the plot over, to break up any compacted areas, and then add in a good quantity of manure or home made compost? Also, you can't plant so close to a hedge...for every meter of height of hedge you should come half a meter out before planting. Also you need to weed the place from end to end and especially get rid of that ivy.

Because...basically your plants have grown poorly because they're short of food, water and probably light. The tall hedge and weeds will be taking most of the goodness and moisture out the soil and unless I'm mistaken, you're not getting the 2/3rds of a day of good light every day that vegetables really need. Most vegetables suffer in semi shade.

So don't even think about sowing seeds yet but get the spade out and put in several days work on your soil instead. Dig it as well as possible, add compost, manure, leaf mould or anything you can lay hands on into the soil then think of constructing a few edged beds on top so you can add an extra layer of compost and manure. I'd make these as close to the fence side as possible, though make sure you avoid any layer of hardcore or foundations under the topsoil.
    Val.
  • mm not too sure what double dig is !!!! only moved in half way through the year and gave it all a good dig over. will start this weekend. what to do about the hedge, mmmmm its only on one side, does the affect it too much ?
that ivy is a bloody pain lol

thanks to all who have posted, will update soon xxx

I put 6 or 7 loo roll inerrs into one of those punnets in which supermarkets sell peaches and plums. That holds them together until the seedlings are ready for planting.

    I do find

    1. The soil level needs to be a bit below the top of the inner, if you are going to water from the top.
    2. That may mean that you have a dry bit of inner at the top when you plant, I take that off.
    3. If you want the roots to grow sideways as well as down, it pay to break the side of the pot (pinch it is a couple of places) before you plant it out.

Thank you for this, I'll have another go - I think I must have wet them too much.

Feefee I have the same weeds as you, and apart from dandelions and nettles, I don't know what they are called. At least you can see which are the veg and which are the weeds. I'm sure I pull up 90% of my salad seedlings through the summer, thinking they are emerging weeds! I haven't grown anything to overwinter so now the weeds are all over the beds.

That's a good sized plot and I like the protective cage. It would blow down in the wind we get here :(, I just have poultry netting around the plot to keep the hens and cats out.

I haven't grown any of the veg you have there so I can't suggest what stays and what goes - you've had some great advice - but I guess you and I will be out weeding and digging over the next week or so. I have a compost bin ready to empty, and loads of manure, and I really would like to make more room to be !

    Good luck.
