How exactly do you do this? I used loo roll tubes a couple of years ago, filled with multipurpose compost (or maybe seed compost), poked bean and sweetcorn seeds into them, watered them and the cardboard tubes soaked up the water, unravelled and collapsed. Should they have been supported in cell trays or little pots? I've used most of last year's stash of tubes as firelighters instead.

I put 6 or 7 loo roll inerrs into one of those punnets in which supermarkets sell peaches and plums. That holds them together until the seedlings are ready for planting.

    I do find

    1. The soil level needs to be a bit below the top of the inner, if you are going to water from the top.
    2. That may mean that you have a dry bit of inner at the top when you plant, I take that off.
    3. If you want the roots to grow sideways as well as down, it pay to break the side of the pot (pinch it is a couple of places) before you plant it out.
If you've have not made a mistake, you've made nothing

Hey all just thought I'd join in and say that I really can't wait to get going with my seeds then plants I have garlic in two tubs but have noticed that one pot has become waterlogged on a few occasions I wonder if this has killed them off!
I have a Few leeks that I started in pots and moved so they stayed in then planted out but have stunted there growth massively any ideas what I can do with them or shall I throw and lesson learned?

I have all my seeds for the year but I won't be doing cabbages the slugs love them but im not as keen so giving them a miss this year also the Jamie Oliver sweet potatoes from homebase (expensive)did absolutely nothing and the sweetcorn the woodlice were eating so I declined I guess at least something got fed! Is ther anything anyone is not trying and why?

I tried using loo roll last year and I found that they didn't rot away fast enough and as a result my peas did really poorly.

This is the time of year I traditionally dig out the mung beans and alfafa etc and do a bit of indoor sprouting. Extra vits in my son's school pack ups to stave off the post Xmas snotty nose season AND it stops me wasting all my veggie patch seed.

I too can't resist the urge to see a green shoot of summat, (reckon it's that end of winter SAD & have found bit of sprouting keeps me sane till it's time to plant proper!

I experiment a bit with shop bought dried pulses to keep costs down & give it that edge of exitement that comes with gardening "proper" till the worst of the frosts have passed. Spend hours looking at seed catalogues I can't afford too ;)
