i always get excited at this time of year
but planting is no good for me just now
i did it early feb about 3 years ago
and all i ended up with were leggy seedlings i couldnt plant out for fear of frosts
i use the square foot method in raised beds and once i plant my seedlings, i plant seeds in the next bed
that year, they both grew at the same rate
so its not worth me planting just now:(0 -
I have potted up some peas and lobelia today, I just couldn't waitTaking responsibility one penny at a time!0

I know the feeling, winter is no good for all of us. Just bought a Vitopod Propagator from suttons. On offer at £46.95, cant wait for that to come and get real results.Kind Regards

Well, I have winter lettuces and peas to plant (under cover) which I've just been waiting to have the time to get round to sowing! Also all the year round cauliflower needs sowing too. But yeah, the other things that say they can be sown in January, I'm going to wait a few more weeks yet.I'm broke, not poor. Poor sounds permanent, broke can be fixed. (Thoroughly Modern Millie)

I have all manner of seeds to get going, but I'll wait a few weeks then start them off in little plastic propogators indoors as I reckon after all this mild weather there'll be a cold snap so I'll wait for that before doing anything major then losing it all. I am however digging over the front garden for the first time and rooting out all the rubble and builders clay in preparation - it's good just to get a bit mucky!

What do you still have on the veg plot now ?
I only have garlic and onions (planted in November, for harvest next summer) and some purple sprouting broccoli, which will start to be ready in 2 or 3 weeks time I hope. The last of my leeks came up yesterday.
Only seeds I have planted so far are some chillis, from seed saved from last years crop, which I planted in a propagator this week.0 -
It is definitely that time of the year when I also get twitchy but I am most definitely sitting on my hands for a few weeks yet
I have autumn planted garlic, shallots and onions on the allotment. Spring cabbages and broccoli too plus a few relics of parsnips, swedes and so on. Feelafeela, it sounds as though you`ll have to make lots of veggie meals
Tonymm, what will you be putting in after your broccoli?0 -
too early for me. Last years learnt that with few south facing windows starting early makes a big difference, even wi propagators, light and more time produced better results than a propagator east facing. But with no heating in the house and hardly any window sill space one cold night could se anything I tried to start off dead in its tracks I think.0

I've got parsnips, beetroot, cavolo nero, leeks (just out of curiosity how early should I plant leeks cos I planted them early last year and they still didn't get fat?), swiss chard, jerusalem artichokes, broad beans coming up etc...
I too think we are in for a cold snap at some point. If the winter is generally mild we usually get at least one lot of snow here in late January/February. It never sticks but it's too chilly for seedlings that are not weeds.. they survive whatever.Well behaved women rarely make history.0
