after looking at some web site i have tried a syetem restore by going through all programs, accessories, system restore however it does not allow me to pick a previous date i have done a malwarebytes full scan but nothing as come back i have wanted to do a scan with comodo but this will not scan i dont have the xp cd so cant reinstall the above as been done in safe mode, also tried to do a system recovery as the computer was booting up but yet again rebooted itself.
i really need to get my wifes uni work off the pc if poss as she has not been saving it to the external hard drive

When you start the computer, press the F8 key.

Does the computer work in safe-mode?

    Backup the data in Safe-Mode.

    Then run a Windows repair.

Initially, try the following at a command prompt:

    chkdsk c: /R

If that doesn't work, here are instructions on how to do a repair. It's a slightly hidden feature and not the same as a standard recovey:

    http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/topic/138-how-to-repair-windows-xp/

If you have an Intel P4 processor, you may want to read this too:

    http://en.kioskea.net/forum/affich-10056-windows-xp-reboot-loop-help

Before doing any of the above, make sure you have a backup of all your data.

F8, safe mode with networking, post a hijackthis log. Does it have a factory restore partition.

Re uni work, external drives fail sometimes.

The fact you can still get into Safe Mode suggests it could be one of the programmes starting up in normal mode which is causing this.

Go into Start, Run & type cmd then press enter. type msconfig and press enter again and look to see what you have in startup.

Now you should only really have important things in there like ACPI, Anti-Virus software, anything else isn't really needed on startup
