Thanks everyone ill do the event log thing in the morning and let you know, read about about wake on LAN but why would it suddenly be doing it now? We've had the same modem for a couple of years

certainly a strange one, I was going to say maybe wake on lan had been enabled somehow but that wouldn't explain the shut downs...
    Starting Weight (19/02/12): 17st, 1lb. Target Weight: 14st
  • Unplug and re-plug the 20 / or / 24 pin Pin Motherboard Molex to PSU plug, if there's any connective between the green and the blacks you will have permanent ON. Same goes for the ON/OFF and the RESET pinouts on the MOBO. Have you an old PCi Modem in one of your slots ?

John's WOL suggestion is a good one, machines have an S4 feature of 'wake~on~event' in the BIOS, have you reset the BIOS recently or have you a Wireless KB & Mouse .. .. they can turn it on from anywhere in the world?

One more just in case you have a software conflict and the Windows is causing an auto-reboot, that would explain both shutdown & re-boot, GoTo the Start menu, then Control Panel then Performance and Maintenance, and then System, [or by right clicking on "My Computer" and selecting properties] then :

    - click the Advanced tab
    - click Settings in the Startup and Recovery
    - uncheck "Automatically restart

Depends on you BIOS brand there are only two, but if you look here there will be a screen like one of these that will say something like :

    - event
    - WOL
    - Wake on Lan
    - Boot on Lan
    - boot on mouse / keyboard
    - Power on Lan .. or whatever, have a look at those pics, you will see yours !

ive had alook at the event logs for 12-13 but cant see them
do you mean its a physical thing to shut down with a switch? if so i dont do that i just go through start to shut down
ive been checking the event logs with windows help at the times of shut down and power up but it all seems to be normal
    ill check the BIOS
just to add its been fine for the last day or so(dont want to jinx it now though!!)

Once in the event logs you ned to click WINDOWS LOGS then SYSTEM

Then click EVENT ID so that all Event IDs are in order so you can quickly scroll down to 12 and 13 (im pretty sure theyll be there)

What I mean is I 'think' your computer is physically shutting itself down and turning itself on with the switch. Not you thats doing it
If Event IDs 12 and 13 coincide with when it powers 'itself' on and off then it points to a possible faulty switch

How does faulty RAM turn a PC on?

A fault could put it to sleep on & off. I've had the problem and that app identified it!
