Electricity usage by estate agents in empty property......

this is nearly 6 months of electric costs.. £40 is not a vast amount .... the boiler will have used some if the gas boiler has been left on frost control

I don't think my boiler has frost control, so have just put the heating on a couple of times for about an hour..........its been a mild winter so far. I know £40 is not a huge amount, but for a completely empty property having had viewings mainly in the summer (light evenings etc) then do think its is excessive.

£40 in 6 months? What do you expect? Just pay it.

The time you have spent on here complaining about it would have cost you more than that in lost productivity doing something more worth while.
Eat vegetables and fear no creditors, rather than eat duck and hide.
  • Quite a bit if the thermostat is set on high and the boiler is kicking in every five minutes 24/7. How much gas usage has there been?

What would I do? Pop round and see how much it's consuming with just the boiler hooked up, firing and not. Then check for appliances plugged in and external/garage/loft lights left on. It's very odd.

Now, now. I think you are being unnecessarily rude to the OP. They have a mystery to uncover ane I'd quite like to know the answer. You however patently have absolutely no interest, which is fine, but why post in that case?

What about the time you have spent on here posting unhelpful irrelevancies just to be waspish?

If the property is completely empty maybe the EA did leave some lights on but then it's better to have a £40 bill for 6 months for random lights left on then to come back and find your house has squatters in it.

BTW what appliances do you have in the kitchen that can be plugged in? The EA may have put them on when doing the viewings.
    I'm not cynical I'm realistic :p

Speak to the agent, perhaps they accidentally left them on once. It's not a massive bill though.

If you used 106 units you are paying 37p a unit that seems very high.

This is because it is a low number of units on a 'no standing charge' tariff.

Heating system, although gas, will run at about 300W of electricity - so about 1.8kWh for running 6 hours.

  • Thanks all ( well most of you) for your helpful replies. In answer to a few questions, the property is completely empty, no appliances other than fitted cooker, dishwasher etc. The heating was only on for about 2 days, at a couple of hours at a time, and thermostat set to 18 deg.........as I said before, have had a very mild winter so far so have not used it much at all. The gas reading was only increased by a couple of units which reflects the minimal useage.
As another poster has said, although its only a small amount, it is still significant when I've had 10 viewings in 6 months with the majority being in the summer when lighting was not needed. It is a bit of a mystery and I just wanted some opinions on whether this seemed like a reasonable amount.....was expecting about £5 worth! Will be talking to agents on monday anyway so will see what they say.
