Surely you don't actually believe this? Because if you do, you have no idea what you talking about.

I know that it's normally those who moan and speculate that can't be bothered to actually do anything constructive such as complain.

If everyone at the station in question had the same attitude then are you surprised nothing has been done?

As an aside, I do happen to have a bit of an idea about the way the rail networks operate, several family and friends work or have worked for various franchises from the days of BR to current.

I know why they don't open the gates - they want to stop fare evaders and make sure people touch out with oyster cards. I tailgated an oyster card user last week, because the gate I queued to use wouldn't take a paper ticket (obviously there was one stuck in the gate) and thats what everyone else was doing. There were too many people to use another gate. Quite dangerous as you can get stuck in the gate if you aren't quick enough.

On my way home I actually found the gate line unattended (gates closed, no staff at gate and gateline not in view of a manned ticket office). Not the first time i've seen it happen either. Yet another health and safety violation by staff at south west trains...

Perfectly valid for gates to be monitored remotely via cctv, I think you'll find.

Yeah, but it wasn't though... How do I know this? Because I found the guy who should have been on the gate half way down the station...

South west trains must think us customers are stupid - but we know whats going on.

Naturally that means there was no CCTV camera pointing at it with a CCTV operator at the control desk then right?

Just because you found the bloke elsewhere doesn't mean that the position isn't covered or that he's not doing his job. It's just you being a grump and jumping to conclusions in order to blame someone else.

As I've mentioned previously, twitter is a powerful tool these days.

This is a problem experienced by many stations, but the staff at this station are particularly disorganised, clueless and simply do nothing other than look on in bemusement every morning as if a herd of cattle are moving through the station.

Sounds just like the people that work for the local authorities wait until there's a major death toll then they may do some thing about it, until then cross your figure's and hope it not you on the news.

Either that or they do something to prevent it and then everyone moans about the health and safety police being too over zealous.

Then if they don't do anything posts like yours pop up!

Not having a dig, I'm just making a point, they're damned if they do and damned if they don't.

Can we be told the name of the station so we can check the papers for the 2011 death toll and serious accidents?

I do not want to complain to the train operator as I believe they are already aware of the problem, but have chosen to ignore it.

Instead - I would like to make the situation as difficult, lengthly and expensive for them as possible - and wondered if anyone had any suggestions as to what I could do?

Of course they are well aware of the problem - but maybe there isn't a solution - short of say closing the station in peak hours. So maybe ignoring it is the optimum solution

As to what you can do - maybe get yourself hurt and sue them.

Surely all you have to do is wait patiently on the train platform until it's clear to exit? Your safety is not just the responsibility of the TOCs - you're involved as well.
    Can I help?
