Boiler question.... re: Flame and Pump

Are ALL boilers desinged for the flame to go out on the boiler once the water in the system is upto temperature and for the pump to just continue to circulate the warm water? After a recent huge gas bill I've been baffled at our bill and we have put our heating to timed... but for the 2 hours its on in the morning and the 3 hours its on it the evening the flame light never goes off - therefore using 10 units of gas a day (112kwh). I've put my boiler (Potterton Combi 80) into google but can't find the info I'm after - can anyone help???

I think that is a red herring question. Try clicking the room stat off. If the flame stops it is working correctly.

If the room in which the stat is installed never reaches temperature then the boiler will continue to deliver heat. How much depends on a number of factors, the boiler temperature stat setting, the gas rate and whether the boiler modulates.

What is the boiler stat set to? It isnt on max is it?
Feudal Britain needs land reform. 70% of the land is "owned" by 1 % of the population and at least 50% is unregistered (inherited by landed gentry). Thats why your slave box costs so much..

Turning the stat down does click the boiler off... but my query is about the flame - I understand that the boiler will continue to deliver heat until temperature is reached but it's my understanding that once the water has got to temp, the flame will go off on the boiler but the pump will continue to circulate the hot water.

This is something we can't control - it's automatic. On the boiler manual which I found through google it says:
The Combi 80 adjusts automatically to provide central
    heating outputs between 24 kW (81,880 Btu/h) and 10.4
kW (35,480 Btu/h) to suit the system requirements.

my combi has a dial on the front of it for the rads and oen for the water, the dial for the heating sets the "return" temperature for the boiler, the room stat will keep the boiler pumping water round until it reaches the set temperature, the dial on the boiler will set the temperature at which the burner cuts out , if i set the boiler control at its highest temperature the burner will stay lit until it sees the water temperature of 80deg, if i have it on half way the boiler will stay lit until it sees a water temp of 40 deg etc. The room stat will keep the boiler in operation until the room temperature is realised regardless of the temperature i have set on the boiler itself , hope that helps .

The boiler modulates the flame depending on the requirement, but should stay on while there's a demand.

My old house had this - this boiler has nothing!!!! It doesn't have a dial on the front.

Well yes, but it's still a red herring question. If your radiators are capable of delivering 10kW (minimum modulation) then the flame will not extinguish unless the roomstat clicks off.

You probably have over 10kW of radiator "capacity" but at any moment in time this will be influenced by your TRV settings. I prefer a simple "rule of thumb", a hot large radiator = 3kW, and a hot small radiator = 2kW. Go round and add up your "hot" radiators.

    Pull the other one!

The controls are under a hinged flap at the bottom.
