I have long held the view that there should be a ceiling on benefits, taking into account what the person is capable of earning would be a great place to start.

My parents chose to have six children and my dad had 3 jobs to provide for us, he died at 56 before he even got to claim his pension the only benefit he would not consider to be charity.

I wouldn't want to see anyone in need and I'm not a hard person but I have to work really hard to earn less they are getting for no effort. Having said that I would rather be me doing what I do than be famous for being a scrounger.;)

  • I bet she sells all her old kids stuff on ebay and makes a fortune there too! With 40k coming in who needs hand me downs!

And If all she's good for is laying on her back, couldn't she get a job as a bed tester? :D

That astonishing. I work 60hrs a week for a bank (working time rules dont apply if you want to keep the job) as a manager and my wife works too. We don't earn anyway near £50k.

Though the story is in the Mail....so add a very large pinch of salt!

This really could be a "get rich quick scheme" (Queenie says tongue-in-cheek!).

Seriously, think about it - cast your dignity and self respect aside for a mo ... ;)

The inferance that it's in "The Mail" can't automatically make it invalid! Obviously, there must be an eliment of truth behind it or it could easily be discredited!

I am now erring on the 'world has gone completely mad' and I am just a late developer!!! *wobbles bottom lip repeatedly*

Dear Sirs/Madam/whoever will listen that has a bottomless pit of benevolence: please may I claim for my youngest two kinder, plus their elder 3 siblings who are completely traumatised by the fact they are mentally scarred by the fact they were unable to keep up with the, then, current trends of Ralph Lauren and Paul Smith because their hard working parents were too busy working to make ends meet to be able to afford such "luxury" items!!?? You are of course free to deduct the amount of working time which left a huge deficit in the modern criteria of "quality time" that we are expected to provide aforementioned children on the basis that we had to work double shift in order to provide the equivalent of "State Benefits" which our taxes most generously subsidise!
Oh, and could you please explain to me why I am having to pay not just for my own childrens extravagant spending due to the uncensored plugging of extortionate advertising for named brands, but also the upkeep of those who make a career choice out of the welfare state system?

    Yours, most sincerely,
Miss End Of Her Tether (& co.!)

You have failed to claim for their tramau due to lack of PS2 each, non picture messaging mobile, no plasma telly etc. Then there is the diet they were no doubt forced to eat. How is a child meant to live without twizzlers (I am still on the look out for these - are they like sparklers :) ) force fed a green colour veg with most meals, no fizzy pop etc. Then in school no doubt they were victimised as they were never sent to the head master for swearing and bullying, they were mocked by classmates for calling the teachers Miss & Sir. They have never had the opportunity to pinch a car coz their dad hasn't taught them how to hot wire one.

Which paper would the story have had to be in to be true? The Star maybe :p . Someone has mentioned the lovel Ms Bardsley (supermodel now). When details of her income - over £30k in her own words on wife swap - were published in the Mail another poster said they can't be true coz it was in the Mail. Mr & Mrs Bardsley were another couple too ill to work they said supping cans and smoking. No probs in churning out the kids though. ;)

I do not begrudge any genuine needy person benefits. I am glad the system exists to help those. What irritates me immensely is career claimants who have never worked nor have any intention of doing so.

I hear the lovely Ms Bardsley is making a mint from her new celebrity status.

This country is serious screwed up. When all you have to do to make stacks of cash & be famous is either be a thick as s**t ( Jade Goody ) have plastic tits & shag anything that moves ( Jordan ) or be celebrity scum ( Bardsley ).

The people who go out & buy Hello/OK magazines have alot to answer for helping line the pockets of this purile pond life.

    BUt i'm not bitter :)

Bardsleys fame wont last long. She is a freak show star,as are many of the people on 'reality' tv,they just cant see it. In 2 or 3 years she will be unknown as she will no longer be a novelty and so no longer entertaining.
How these people can honestly think anyone is sympathetic or even interested in how they live is beyond me.
Life will come back to haunt them one day when all the kids are gone and the money they benefit by goes with them.

Maybe Zippy was saying that the slant on the story was such that it panders to the agenda of Middle Englanders. IMO this story is true as it is possible to have a large income provided by the State (although thats obviously not what the welfare state was set up for), BUT there is no alternative viewpoint given. The Daily Mail is not renowned for its subtle reporting! This case is reported in the paper precisely because it is unusual, but it is used to illustrate the superiority of 'Middle Englanders' and to bolster support for benefit cuts confirmining that all claimants are lazy scum and should get off their !!!!!!. Those in the real world accept that there are always going to be those that make a career out of claiming benefits but these people are in the minority. The majority of claimants use the benefits system as it was intended. There are also a minority who find it very difficult to access the help to which they are entitled but we dont see those stories in the Mail or most other papers for that matter.
