How much was the renewal ?
If you're sure that you turned off the Auto Renew why not let the card issuer do the chargeback, if what you say is correct the chargeback shouldn't reject so you won't have to pay the £50 admin fee.

£12. When right persevere. I like the idea.

But who determines if the chargeback is valid? Fasthosts? If yes then it's going to fail - they've already disputed the Auto Renew setting.

Yes and they can amend the logs as they please. Its their logs after all.

It will depend on the card scheme as to whether a chargeback could be done & be successful. Visa will accept the date of cancellation (the date the auto renew was turned off) MasterCard require written proof & the op's diary note is not sufficient for this. The merchant can also reject the claim should they believe the charge is valid, although they would need some form of proof to support this.

    What kind of proof?

Op making a note on his calendar isn't really proof. I've just written 'Paid 3 months rent to landlord' on mine, doesn't prove much.

A screenshot or email confirmation would be more appropriate.

Are you sure you turned it off correctly op?

They don't send emails out. Screenshot won't show time and date would it?

i have domains with fasthost and when i turn off auto renew i get an email confirmation of what i have done to the registered domain admin email addreess.

Agreed - I have the same. Could you possibly have made a mistake and not actually turned off the auto-renew - didn't press 'Confirm' or 'Apply Settings' etc??

Very hard for you to prove you did and very easy for them to prove you didn't. Unless you have this confirmation email.

Further, even when auto-renew is enabled Fast-Hosts send you a courtesy reminder 30 days prior to processing the renewal so that you have chance to turn it off and cancel the renewal. It reads (just copied out of my inbox):
    Renewal Reminder

    Dear XXXXXXXXX
    Account No. UKXXXXXXXXX

Renewal due on this account within the next 30 days:

Our records show that you have a renewal due within the next 30 days - you'll find full details of the renewal in your Fasthosts control panel. To ensure continuous service this renewal will be processed automatically and will be charged to the primary payment method held on the account. Below is a brief summary of the upcoming annual or biennial renewals, if you have any ongoing monthly payments, they do not appear in this summary, but can be viewed at all times via your control panel.

.net Domain Renewal - XXXXXXXX renewal (1 years) £9.49 (£11.39 inc VAT)

    Date Due: 2011-07-23

If you do not wish to renew this product or service, please ensure it has been cancelled prior to the billing date above. Details of our cancellation process can be found on our support website by following the relevant link below.

I think fast hosts would have a pretty good chance to successfully defending this one and charging you the £50 admin fee.

I know this, seems the OP is convinced they turned off the auto renewal though. I think not, which is why i suggested the chargeback ;)

Where i work, we wouldn't action a chargeback for £12 anyway, we'd just refund it if the customer insisted on carrying on !

    - Written dated proof, so an email/letter from you to the merchant, email confirmation from the merchant (I believe another poster has mentioned that they receive an email confirmation when they turn off the auto renew option). A dated screen shot may suffice. This is MasterCard though not Visa, although if your account was MasterCard your issuer could still try a chargeback with your information but it would be considered weak (as written proof is a condition of the chargeback) & the merchant could reject on the basis of no proof.

I can't comment on that personally, but I do believe texranger does infact own a webhosting company so inclined to believe him when he says..

They won't charge you. They're just trying to deter you from trying to get your money back.

When is the county court involved in chargebacks? Never, unless a small claims action is raised.
