The alternative to the BBC is the "Truth" according to the Daily Mail or Rupert Murdock.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

May not be completely relevant, but I think my TV licence is the best value entertainment that I have. Everything that the BBC does for £145.50 a year is amazing. I think we are very fortunate to have such a high quality public service broadcaster (sorry, sound like an employee, but I'm not, just a fan!)
I know I am going further off topic, but the amount of times I use the BBC website, e.g. The education services, it seems fabulous value, especially when I think how much some people are prepared to pay for sky tv.

The Bbc aren't just giving us just outstanding television, for example the recent Frozen Planet, but a wonderful radio service. I listen to Local Radio from first thing in the morning and often into the evenings. Has has already been mentioned the Bbc website can often be a first point of call when searching for information on any subject,
Entertaining and educational, well worth a few pounds a week.
Quality TV, no advertisements every 10mins into a programme, selection of radio, Iplayer and the website (News, food, gardening, education, history etc., et., ) = excellent value for money!

The TV licence inspectors are employees of a private company and have no more right of entry into your home than any other member of the public who may show up.

I didn't know that, i've always just presumed they work for the Bbc, this is an interesting read regarding their pay and powers.

They work for Capita - the exception is if they are in possession of a search warrant, in which case I would expect them to be accompanied by a member of the local constabulary. :D

Please tell us, oh oracle of current affairs, what constitutes 'real news'. And if you think the BBC are biased, they're nothing compared to Sky News.
Or Fox News, which is what we'll get if we reject Public Service Broadcasting.

I really did not know where to post this, so I decided to post it here. Feel free to move it if you want.

Question is simple. I do not need to watch TV, should I stop paying the license?

If you think so, what should I do to keep the TV since I use it to stream movie / play with the PS3?

    Thanks as usual :)

If you do not watch live TV you do not need to pay these "people". The movies you stream are not live feeds so do not require a BBC TV Licence.

These people here can help you deal with the BBC "people"

Ah the old we don't like right-wing so right-wingers must fund our left-wing propaganda.

We'll keep calling it a "Public Service Broadcaster" too even though there is nothing PSB about it.

Not true. Channel 4 get some & some is used to pay for the upgrade of transmitters for the digital switchover

Which was turned down but nice try ;)

becasue its a tax & the law says you must pay it

And the left get very upset if people refuse to fund their broadcaster.

If I remember rightly the "tax" was created as a means of funding the BBC when there was nothing else around, its well past its sell-by-date now
  • nig3d it doesnt make any differance if you pay online monthly or by dd monthly, its still 6mths ahead and 6mths in arrears so in march you will be paid up til sept 2012 and april onwards will be towards next years.

It would still be excellent value if it was a voluntary subscription. People would then have the choice and you could still be in love with all those "excellent" services I do not use.

I do get harassed, threatened and intimidated by the BBC though because I don't pay them. Tell me how would you feel if someone came to your door demanding you help fund Satellite or Cable even if you don't use them?

I personally would prefer Cable over the BBC because I get more for my money including a phoneline but then I'm an old fashioned freedom of choise person
