It is because no-body yet has payed for it, i take it you mean new build as it has only just been built
  • the bt socket is fitted when your flat is being built. as someone has already said a charge is only levied once for bt service ...as you are the 1st person to live there and require service you have to pay. once you have had the bt service the records would show that service existed at your property and subsequent owners would be connected free of charge
  • Thanks for the responses folks. Guess I'll just have to pay the money and have a BT line for a year unless I pay for disconnection - tis a bit annoying but has to be done, and I'm guessing the connection fee isn't going to come down so may as well do it now.
  • If its any help i believe you can pay it in four instalments.

We are moving into a new build house next week and BT have said that we need to pay £75 to get our phone line moved there. Does anybody know if this is correct? how can they treat existing customers like this?

Are they any ways around this? Could we change to another supplier or would they charge the same?

The first person in a new move has to pay this, although already installed the first person in has to pay it
  • There is no way round this,as some one has to pay for the new cabling etc.But you can pay the £75 in four instalments if you ask them.

There is no way round the charge. Very few alternative suppliers even entertain new installations, and those that do (like the Phone Coop) actually charge MORE than BT's £75!!

If this is a real problem, the only way round it is if you are moving to an area that is a cabled by the local cable company (eg NTL etc) who would be willing to install for free, and you could transfer your number for free, too. Even if this is possible, it may not save money in the long run as the number of options available are then very much reduced.
  • Hi all. Ive just moved into a new flat, which has BT sockets etc.
When i rang them up they asked for £74 for a connection fee!!
Is there any way of getting round this or do i just have to bite the bullet!!

    Thanks, J
